whatever it's called...these things:

anyone have one/familiar with these? what's your opinion on them?

from what i've read it looks like the best snes a new buyer could look for. it looks great, it's smaller/lighter, it's newer (1997) and has no moving parts so it'll last a lot longer, it's easier to find one in good condition, and it's really easily moddable to play jap/us games simultaneously. plus it looks cool; not a lot of people have them!

i recently bought a super famicom japanese console, but i might sell it to trade it up for one of these unless anyone has enough knowledge to convince me otherwise. i know these thing's can't output s-video & have a cheaper feel.

The "moving parts" on the original SNES that I think you're referring to is the spring lever used to eject the game from the system. Even if that breaks it doesn't matter because you can still operate the system without it.

edit: never mind I thought the jr had only RF.

From Wiki
Changes

SNS-101 standalone package

The SNS-101 model was a lighter and more compact redesign of the original SNS-001 model of the SNES. Released at a lower price point, Nintendo marketed it as an entry-level gamer's system[4] for customers who were on a budget and who may have been put-off by the large outlay required for other more modern systems such as the Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn and PlayStation.

The SNS-101 lacks the expansion slot on the base featured on the SNS-001, making it incompatible with the Japan only Satellaview add-on.

The power and reset buttons were moved to the left hand side, and it no longer has a cartridge eject button.

As with the redesigned NES (NES-101) before it, the SNS-101 model has no LED power light to indicate when the unit is on (as the original NES, SNES, and N64 all included) The RF connector was also removed, however an N64 RF modulator can be used to give the SNS-101 RF output if required.[5]

The SNS-101 features the same "MULTI OUT" audio/video connector used on the original SNS-001 model.[6] However the SNS-101 only outputs composite video and stereo audio through this port, even though the original SNS-001 supported composite video, S-Video and RGB.

The video encoder chip used in the system still supports S-Video and RGB, but these pins were left unused. Many users who wished for a better picture resorted to modifying the system to restore this missing functionality.[7]

well, atleast the mod is possible, why not just mod the cart slot of an SFC with a US door. or just swap cart PCBs.

I honestly never liked the design on this one at all. It just looks and feels really cheap.

I have one new in box, only used it once to make sure it worked. It can be modded for S-video and RGB, and it does not exhibit the purple line effect that plaques certain SNES model 1. In any case, I am partial to SNES Model 1

It's not bad. My only real complaints with it is the lack of S-Video and a power LED as mentioned in the Wiki quote. But like it's already been said, you can easily add these two things back. That is, easy if you're good with soldering. If I didn't know how to solder, I would stay away from the mini. The lack of a power LED can get really annoying.

About the moving parts, yeah it doesn't have the eject button but it's also missing something else. The original SNES model had a lever on the power switch that would lock the cartridge in place. Well, it would lock THIS type of cart in place. You would be able to eject that cart unless you powered the console off. THIS type of cart, with its slope design, would shut the power off if you ejected the cart while powered on.

The mini has a better video chip than its cousin. I found that after you put back the s-video capability you'll get a better picture with the mini than you do with the regular SNES using s-video.
