Can someone confirm that the PS3 is indeed Region Free?

Post by ReddMcKnight »

I know that it won't play PS1 or PS2 Games from other regions, but the thing is supposedly region free when it comes to PS3 Games. Can anyone confirm if this is correct? I want to play a PAL game on my NTSC-U Console.

I have a JPN PS3 and a US PS3. All of my JPN games work on the US model, and all of my US games work on the JP model. Never tried PAL games.

Yep, I have a Japanese Playstation 3 and I own games from the UK, New Zealand, America, Korea and Japan. All work like a charm.

What you will want to keep in mind however is that DLC is region-locked to the same region the game is. That'll mean you'll need to make an account for that specific region and you'll need some method of crediting the account. To be honest, I think this is really lousy, since Microsoft's DLC is region free, even though the games' region-locking is up to the discretion of the publisher. Bizarre, eh?

Out of interest, what sorts of games do you intend on importing? I can't imagine there'd be much from PAL-territories which you couldn't already get from the USA.

White Knight Chronicles 2. The PAL Territories get it two months before the NTSC-U/C Areas, and I just happen to be very impatient. Heh. :)

The PS3 is NOT region free. The publishers can still choose to region lock their titles, the vast majority don't though.

PS1 and PS2 (if you have a compatible PS3) will only work on the same region system. IE PAL on PAL, NTSC on NTSC.

Really? I can't imagine, if they really had the choice to lock out PS3 versions, why certain publishers would leave the PS3 versions region-free while they lock them for the 360. That would just be absurd.

Do you know of any games that are region-locked for PS3?

Ummmmm.... Can you name one PS3 game that is region-locked???

Every PS3 game I have ever heard of is region-free. Unfortunately, a lot of DLC is not region-free.

Every PS3 game I've heard of it region-free.
Nothing else it, though (Blu-Ray movies aren't even, as far as I know)

I could swear there was a disc title that came to EU that was network only in the US and the EU disc was region locked, but the title escapes me.
