I don't think I saw XG3 mentioned in any of those. :P

Go back and play Matt Hazard again. Then imagine you payed $60.00 for it. Then you'll have an idea why it was so massively panned.

Having played it, it deserves all the shit it gets. It's a horrible, buggy, unfunny and unfun game.

I can see where you're coming from, I got it for pretty cheap. I think it was worth the money I spent for it.

It had it's fair share of flaws, but I didn't think they were game breaking or anything. If I give it another go I might have a different opinion, though.

I thought everyone was talking about the side scrolling one, which was awesome.

Also, the retail release was a bugdet release so no one paid $60.

A bit of research and you are right. The MSRP was $49.99, which is still $40.00 too high for that game, and hardly what I would consider a budget price.

The story of the game, and the game parodies, were enough to keep me playing all the way through. And some of those were pretty bad too, like "Master Chef". But good lord was it ever a janky, boring mess in between cutscenes. A shame too, because with a little more money and effort behind it, and some more varied, cross-genre gameplay, it could've been great. Instead it seemed like most of the budget went to Will Arnett and Neil Patrick Harris to turn it a couple of pretty bad performances. Next time just call in Nolan North and call it a day.

I know a few of these are in the Hidden Gems list somewhere, but here are some of my underrated favs...

Bucky O'Hare (NES) - I'm not too familiar with the Bucky license, but this game is superb! It's like Mega Man and Contra rolled up into a green 8-bit puffball in a space suit. One of the best on the system, imho.

Mega Man 8 (PS1) - I like it... don't people not like this one? Addictively challenging gameplay, very nice art and sound direction, I thought.

Gungrave Overdose (PS2) - Stylish, high-paced, cel-shaded arcade 3rd person shooter. Once again, I'm not too familiar with the Gungrave license... but this game was ace for a budget title back in the day!

D2 (DC) - First thing's first - the cut scenes are in abundance. But I think this is one of the rare video game cinematic experiences that actually works. It was one of the first too (correct?). The gameplay is what gets criticized a lot, but I think it's absolutely brilliant! At first it appears just to be an RE clone with some moody visuals, and Parasite Eve-like baddies, but when you actually start fighting it takes you to this FPS arcade shooter battle screen, and at the end of each fight you earn exp pts and lvl up like in an RPG. It's just so cool! An extremely unique gaming experience that gets downright trippy as the story progresses.

Gunvalkyrie (XBOX) - Of the 3 Smilebit games released for the system, this is the only that takes a lot of heat. The others receive mass praise. This one is dogged for it's (agreeably) complicated control scheme, but once you get it down, you'll feel as if the original fatty XBOX controller was specifically designed for this one. Very fun, very challenging.

Base Wars (NES) - Best baseball game I've ever played, and I don't even like baseball! You play as a team of robots/cyborgs in space and have to literally fight the opposing team to avoid getting tagged out and whatnot. Great base stealing system as well. My friends and I have wasted away hours with this one.

P.N.03 (GC) - Of the big Capcom "exclusives" for Gamecube this is the only one that didn't get ported over to any other systems. It gets critiqued for it's minimalistic gameplay and art design, but honestly it's very refreshing in contrast to how challenging the game can get. Plus there's tons great rave tracks, and sexy booty shaking to make this more than worth the $3 you can find it for these days at GameStop.

Death Duel (GEN) - KICK HIS ASTEROIDS!

Elemental Gimmick Gear (DC) - Outstanding LTTP-like action-RPG with stunning hand drawn graphics, and unique 3D boss battles. A real treat that seems to go pretty unnoticed.

Killer7 (GC) - Best game ever.

Genji- Dawn of the Samurai (PS2)
I played through this recently and was blown away. Great visuals. A wonderful period piece. Engrossing story. Fun hack n slash action. I was surprised that I had never really heard anyone talk about this game and that it never really got that high of a rating.

Zeno Clash (PC/Xbox 360)
This game oozes with creativity. The insane plot about Father-Mother and her violent children, the surreal and brutal fantasy world that looks like nothing you have ever seen, the dramatic and eerie soundtrack, the unique first-person-beat-em-up gameplay. The game did reasonably well for an indie title, but it's so unique I just want to scream from the rafters and tell everyone that loves video games that they should play this.

God Hand (PS2)
Everything about this game is over the top except for its sales and ratings. This game is bristling with creativity/insanity. It's cool. It's weird. It's freaky. It's funny. It's stupid. And most importantly it is a goddamn blast to play. This is all about having fun and being a weird ass in chaps while you're doing it. It's a game that was pretty much designed to be misunderstood, but if you are the type of gamer that can appreciate this kind of game, then you probably REALLY appreciate it. This kind of hardcore gaming experience mixed with unrivaled crazy insanity doesn't come around that often. It's a damn shame that Clover studios closed. Between this, Viewitiful Joe, and Okami, they created some of the greatest games on the PS2 that nobody played. Some of the old team members are now working for Ignition to create El Shaddai, which will probably also be brilliant and underappreciated.
