Queen Live at Wembley - Out of all the concerts I have been to or seen, this is still what I consider the best concert of all time. Even though it is missing my favorite Queen song - Killer Queen

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I watched Black Swan. It was very creepy, disturbing, and sexy. I had thoughts of the anime movie Perfect Blue while watching it. I also thought of the Wrestler, without even knowing that it was the same director, but there's some similar themes here. The demands of being a performer and how it can wreck your life.
It's a good movie. However, I wasn't totally amazed by it, as I have seen the themes the movie explores before and I think the Wrestler is more poignant while Black Swan is just sort of a mind fuck. It's more shocking while the Wrestler is more emotional.
I had mixed feelings about the imagery in the movie. On the one hand, I like how the movie never makes it clear what is reality and what is the delusions of Nina's mind. However, part of me felt like the movie was a bit too literal with its imagery. I kind of didn't like that, as it just throws subtlety out the window. Great performances though, but I prefer the Wrestler. Black Swan is more of a psychological mind fuck, while the Wrestler was more of a heartfelt tale. I guess I prefer the later approach. I mean at the end of the movie when SPOILER ALERT
Nina dies, I honestly didn't care. The Wrestler's ending had me tearing up a bit though. People will love this movie for all its symbolism and themes, which is cool. I don't really care about that stuff though. It's great for college discourses but it doesn't make for a movie that hits you emotionally and makes you care. This movie feels like Oscar bait, pretentious but emotionally empty. It's not that I hate it, it's just not all that, given its hype
EDIT: I also love that the Wrestler is very true to life. Real life wrestlers can relate to it. Something tells me though that most ballerinas are not as bat shit insane as Nina from Black Swan and I hope that ballet directors are not dicks like the one in the movie

The Prestige
Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as rival 'magicians'.Good stuff.
Sexy Beast
This one was really out there but Ben Kingsley is seriously hilarious.

I don't see any relationship between breaking the fourth wall and something being meta. If I write a textbook about writing textbooks, I don't have to directly address the reader, or have them acknowledge that they're reading a book or anything. It's still meta-writing.Luke wrote: Yeah it is meta to an extent, but it's definitely not the most meta performance as Portman doesn't even break the 4th wall.
Clearly. But without any sort of support this discussion is worthless. I think it's about picking your nose, so we disagree. This is also just about the broadest thing you could possibly say. I think you would be very hard-pressed to find a piece of media that isn't about "life." I can't think of any off the top of my head. And at least from my perspective, the film is not about one performance, but life...so we disagree there.
The fact that engineering is not as subjective as film has no bearing whatsoever on the point I was making. The "grasp on subjectivity" of the best oscar judge or the worst engineer has no bearing whatsoever on the point I was making. Why would the best oscar judge even matter? I said that it was a film that a huge portion of the academy could personally identify with, and would thus gravitate toward. And I mean no offense by this, none whatsoever, but comparing an engineer to a director/actor/screenwriter etc. is not fair. I get your point and completely understand that people are drawn to subjects dealing with their craft but engineering isn't as subjective as film is, and I would bet dollars to donuts that the best Oscar judge has a better grasp on subjectivity than the worst engineer.
I tried to see The Hangover in the theater and ended up getting cussed out by a middle-aged Hatian woman when I asked her to please stop loudly repeating every line of the film she found humorous and yelling at the Zach Galifianakis to put on some pants. But hey, in movie related news Hangover 2 will rake in 300+ million, but so far has received an awful review from Ebert, who I trust:
Also, I agree with whoever posted that The Wrestler was a more powerful film than Black Swan.

Hobo With A Shotgun - As a fan of really bad movies...this was one of the most epic B movies of all time. Totally over the top, Rutger Hauer is awesome in it and the ridiculously simple plot and obviously bargain basement but practical Gore Gags really took me back to the movies of my youth. I love movies like this, they are an acquired taste but if you are going to try them out then I would suggest this or anything with Bruce Campbell as the lead in it.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I just saw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I'd never seen it before, because when I was younger, and wanted to see it, my parents said it was too lame for them to rent it for me. Then, later, when I could get my own movies, I just didn't care. But the library had it, soI checked it out. It was one of the lamest cheeseball movies I've ever seen, but it was lame in a good way. The rap song during the credits seemed to have an error though. It said Raphael was the leader, when Leonardo was. What's up with that? Didn't the rapper watch the movie?

My dad, my wife, and I just saw the midnight showing of Kung Fu Panda 2.
And it was awesome.
That is all.

Does she? It's very open to interpretation.Gamerforlife wrote: Nina dies
No need to discuss anything further with Limewater about BLACK SWAN; if meta means being self aware (which it does) and you don't think breaking the 4th wall is as meta as you can get, and if you think "every" story written is about life...then well he's arguing for the sake to create an argument.
But everyone go see ATTACK THE BLOCK!
I promise it will not disappoint. I also promise you probably don't want to take a kid with you to see it.
