Playing Old Consoles Online

Post by darthmunky »

For older systems that used to play online, is it still possible to do so? Like with Dreamcast or GameCube for example?

Both only have one game that works online and has a community - PSO. The rest of the US released Gamecube games were network only, which the aforementioned Xlink Kai will let you play online. A smattering of Dreamcast games are playable online, I do not have a list handy, but will look for one when I get home.

some games had workarounds that tricked them into thinking they were online. the only example i know of for this is Mario Kart Double Dash for GC. you can use a program called Warp Pipe to play online.

though it sounds like the previously mentioned Xlink Kai does all this and more.

It all depends on whether the servers for a game are still up, and in most cases they aren't. I've never messed with GameCube online, but the other guys here seem to have covered that pretty well. As for Dreamcast, again that all depends on servers, as well, some people have set up their own servers for games, such as Phantasy Star Online. http://dreamcast.onlineconsoles.com/phpBB2/portal.php This site here should have all the info you're looking for about playing Dreamcast online. As for other systems, the Sega Saturn's NetLink will still work to this day because it doesn't really use the internet, only a standard phone line. As for anything else, I don't think any of the old XBand stuff works anymore, but I could be wrong. Hope this helps!
