Turbografx-16 AC on Famicom?

Post by Retrozoa »

Hi, I just bought a famicom, and I've heard its bad to use a US NES power supply on it, so I rooted around and found that my Turbografx-16 AC adapter seems very compatible with it(fit like a glove when i plugged it in). I am worried about damaging the system though, so could anyone confirm if this is acceptable voltage-wise for the system, or if it''s just as bad as the US NES AC?
Current systems: Atari 2600[x2], NES(top loader), SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation, PS2, PS2 slim, xbox, xbox 360, Turbografx-16, Game Boy Pocket, Game boy SP[x2], Nintendo DS[x2], Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Wonderswan Color, Neo Geo MVS.

Yeah, the reason why you can't use the NES adapter is because it's AC while most other power adapters are DC. Don't even try it. I use a model 1 Genesis / model 2 Sega CD adapter with my Famicom. Here's the specs of that plug from Hobie's post in the AC adapter compilation thread:

Here's what Hobie posted about the Tubrografx plug in that thread:

10.5v DC, 730 mA (I have been using a Genesis Model 1 power brick with no issues)

I just googled and found the specs of an official Famicom adapter:

So you can see that the Famicom's adapter is 10v, the TG is 10.5, and the model 1 Genesis is 9v. Check your TG plug though, maybe it's not an official one. I don't wanna suggest using the TG's 10.5v adapter on the FC, a model 1 Genesis adapter is cheap and easy enough to obtain. The TG adapter might work fine on the FC (the FC should have a voltage regulator) but why risk it?

Everything on the adapter is congruent with the stats you listed, so it seems official. Not understanding voltage though, would the genesis adapter ultimately be better for the system?

edit: as an aside, when I was shopping around for power adapters one shop I stopped in tried to plug an NES adapter in despite me telling them not to. My bad for trusting amateurs though. I got lucky it didn't kill the system.

I would say to play it safe the model 1 Genesis adapter would be better. The TG adapter might work, but I think it would be safer to feed it less voltage rather than more than it requires. There's a voltage regulator inside, so if you feed it the 10.5v when it only wants 10v, it'll regulate it to 10v but also heat up a little more. But that's also if it has that much tolerance. The TG adapter is also 730mA while the FC wants 850mA, so you might run into a problem with that as well.

Whoa, wait, so some one plugged a NES adapter into your Famicom. Did they turn it on? If yes, did it actually power on? It wasn't on for more than a couple second, right? You are indeed lucky if nothing got fried.
