XBox 360 won't read games only DVDs

Can I add a new DVD drive of the same brand? What if it's the same model number?
If no - can I recover the key from the broken one and use it on a new one?
Or is the best bet just buying a new laser/board and hoping for the best?

I'm having the same problem that my DVD won't play games and gives an 'open tray' and if i put in a working drive, it gives the 'please put this disc in an xbox 360' which is really annoying!
