Re: LCD TV's as computer monitors?
Don't think so... The monitor could go as high as 85 or 120Hz IIRC, depending on the displayed resolution. So on the low DC VGA resolution 60Hz should've been a breeze. Most Dreamcast games were PAL 60Hz optimized anyway. Which was a first for Pal regions. No other PAL region console prior to the Dreamcast had such a vast PAL 60Hz standard library. Another thing that makes me believe PAL or NTSC has nothing to do with it -monitors don't think in PAL / NTSC anyway- is the fact that both my PAL copy of HOTD and my Japanese Virtua Cop 2 didn't work on it. One being a Pal region game, the other an NTSC region game. Up until today I still have no idea what the problem was... Maybe the monitor forced itself in a +60Hz mode for most games, and for some obscure reason didn't do this for my Japanese HOTD?...Hobie-wan wrote:Maybe something to do with PAL vs NTSC expectations from the game and the VGA refresh rate?elmagicochrisg wrote: Even then, not all lightgun games will work on all CRT monitors. Re: LCD TV's as computer monitors?
I know there is no PAL/NTSC for VGA output, but the gun has to be looking for the correct frequency for it to work. 60 hertz is a common frequency for VGA and of course matched with NTSC TV. If a PAL game is outputting a 60 Hz VGA mode signal, but the gun code for the game is incorrectly still expecting to see a 50 Hz PAL signal, then that wouldn't work. We know there are games that work in VGA mode when forced, but were set up to allow it by just booting a retail disc. Wouldn't surprise me if there were other screwups related to gun code in VGA mode on PAL systems.elmagicochrisg wrote: Don't think so... Again, Japanese NTSC Virtua Cop had the same problem.
As for the other non-functioning games, none were forced in VGA mode.
