New console talk
New console talk
Do you think with all this new console talk (Xbox and Wii) and what appears to me, that probably most consumers aren't ready for a new system, will cause the gaming market to "crash" again? hmmmmm

Re: New console talk
Gamers are never ready for a new system. Usually, we're all doing just fine with what we have, but the companies go and announce new ones and people buy them like sheep while the original have not even been exploited to their full potential yetenv963 wrote:Do you think with all this new console talk (Xbox and Wii) and what appears to me, that probably most consumers aren't ready for a new system, will cause the gaming market to "crash" again? hmmmmm
The annoying thing is that this is driven by paranoia. Companies worry that the competition will put out a new console, so they start working on one of their own and we end up with a bunch of new consoles earlier than we need. Thus, we get "next gen" consoles with nothing next gen about them at all because we still haven't fully explored what was possible with the previous gen
End rant.

this is a great trend, too. Ever notice how many amazing GBA games came out after the DS? How many incredible PS1 games came out after PS2? Etc.Gamerforlife wrote: Gamers are never ready for a new system. I'm not even ready for current gen systems.
We are prepared to live in the plain and die in the plain!
Re: New console talk
If MS is really going to be announcing a new system soon then I'll be a little surprised. I remember both them and Sony suggesting the 360 and PS3 would last a lot longer than previous generations (usually like a ~5 year lifespan), with the economy being a factor and the rising cost of development, etc.
But it's almost like MS have their pants in a bundle now and must feel pressured by Nintendo set to launch a new system soon, so maybe that's why all these rumors about them doing the same have popped up lately. In Nintendo's position it makes sense with with Wii being so behind as it is technically, but yeah. It looks like things might perhaps go against the idea that we weren't going to see newer consoles as fast as usual this time around.
But I'm pretty much fed up with a lot of the trends myself thesedays and don't currently have a few hundred bucks falling out of my pockets off and on, so for once I'm pretty sure I'll sit this one out and give it a long time before I consider purchasing any next gen console.

Re: New console talk
Look at all the consoles and when they have come out. Generally there is a five year cycle on new consoles, its just that this latest generation's consoles games are expensive to produce. Eventually publishers will make games for the new systems, but for now they are doing all that they can with the current tech.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Once a console is getting phased out we see some of its most amazing games. The Conkers, the Donkey Kong Countries, etc
You could argue the same thing happens when a genre is in decline

That's basically what I was saying, yet now we've got Nintendo set to release a new console already in 2012 and rumors of MS revealing something soon as well. Some of us were kind of expecting there to be no new consoles at all for another few years or so.flojocabron wrote:Look at all the consoles and when they have come out. Haha. Same here. I still don't have a PS3, Xbox360, or a Wii. Perhaps a new console will drive down the current gen's prices though, so maybe I am ready for a new one.Hatta wrote:I'm not even ready for current gen systems.

Re: New console talk
It all happens too fast for me. It's like with the tvs, just as people were starting to get comfy with the whole high def thing, now they are throwing 3d tvs at us already. I honestly would not be surprised at this point to hear that blue ray is about to be phased out by some new thing and that another format war is upon usXeogred wrote:That's basically what I was saying, yet now we've got Nintendo set to release a new console already in 2012 and rumors of MS revealing something soon as well.
