Help me identify a Gameboy/Gameboy Color game

Today I had a flashback of when I was first introduced to the gameboy color. My cousin had this one game that I can't remember what it was. All I remember is the beginning of the story and a bit of gameplay. It was a RPG where you played as a human and you are woken up by a monster type thing who kidnaps your mother/sister/female companion of yours, and goes back to it's world through a portal. You follow the monster in the portal to it's world. Thats all i remember of the story. Throughout the game you would have monsters that follow you around like Pikachu does in Pokemon Yellow (Uses LoZ/pokemon's camera angles as well). In combat your monsters all attack an individual monster (including bosses) one by one, and I don't believe you could change their order of attacking. The battle screen did resemble pokemon so maybe that's why I liked it so much. I'm not sure if it was a gb or gbc game, but I played it on my cousins teal gbc. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
