Next Xbox SDKs already out, E3 reveal in the works?

Microsoft reportedly sends out early software development kits for the Xbox 360's successor in preparation for unveiling next month; EA calls report "total fabrication."

What we heard: On April 25, Nintendo confirmed speculation that it would release a new hardware platform in 2012. This week, another report surfaced about the successor to another console--the Xbox 360.

Develop cites "a senior, trusted, well-placed source" as saying that a software development kit (SDK) for the new Xbox arrived at an unidentified Electronic Arts studio last month. As is the case with many early SDKs, the unit is housed inside a PC chassis.


Is the next Xbox already out in the wild?

The same source said that Microsoft's new device would launch by the end of 2012, and would likely be revealed at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Nintendo has already confirmed that its next home console will not only be unveiled at E3, but will also be playable at the event, which runs from June 7-9.

"Why let Nintendo steal the thunder in June [at E3]?" the source told Develop "It doesn’t want to lose momentum. That's why I think Microsoft is rushing to make an announcement at E3."

The official story: Though Microsoft had not commented as of press time, EA vice president of corporate communications Jeff Brown had a few choice words about the report. "This story is a total fabrication--[it's] 100 percent not true," he told GameSpot.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus, according to EA. However, in March, job listings surfaced that leave little doubt that Microsoft has begun work on its next-generation console.

Sounds like this year's E3 is gonna be a must-see.

I think it's a smart move. Sony is hurting right now. And it's far from over for them. As soon as they get this mess cleaned-up with the hackers. Then they have to take on all the lawsuits that are bound to head their way as a result of it all. And the history of gaming has shown that the gaming industry is a cut-throat industry.

I think announcing a new console just as Sony is hurting is strategy by Microsoft, strike while their biggest competition is weak. With a little nudging from the Wii 2 speculation, I'm sure.

If Microsoft do release another console they better use Blu-Ray. L.A. Noire is going to be on three disks for the 360 but only one on the PS3. They're behind on the times in that regard.

God of War 2 was the best looking and presented game on the playstation 2. I feel like the games on the 360 are finally nearing the systems potential with Gears of War 3 and Mass Effect 3 coming down the line.

Does anyone really believe this? They just released a (so far) successful add on, and the 360 sales in the US and UK are stronger than ever (the rest of the world will just never open up to MS it seems). Why release a new console which will cost them a lot of money, when they are finally having some extra success with the 360?
