My wife has more money than I do, so I would serve to benefit in that regard rather than flush money down a toilet. And I don't know how you ever came to a conclusion that I care more about what others think of me than my own happiness. I do care what others think of me, especially my partner, and my happiness partly depends on my being able to get along well with them. But marriage for me was really something I wanted to do for myself as well as for my wife and family. I wanted the celebration. I wanted the personal and social signs of devotion. I wanted the legal affordances. I wanted to spend my life with someone I could call my wife.
