Nono, overkill is using a red or a genesis as your deck. Ok, your right, it is overkill. In the past I would suggest a secondhand Casablanca for a deck, but it looks like the new ones are not cheap - 10 years ago it would run you $200 for one, now it looks like $500.

What kind of video work do you do Czernobog?

Whatever I can as of late. I got my B.F.A. less than a year ago but work is pretty sparse considering I can't really afford any of my own equipment yet. I was big into doing macro stuff while in college and trying to convey emotions through video and sound without dialogue. Figured I wouldn't get much of a chance to experiment for awhile once I needed video to pay the bills.

I've been filming soccer tournaments lately for a small company. We film them, edit, and upload them to the web. It's not really what I want to do, I would rather work for a studio, but it's pretty hard to find anything around Chicago without having some sort of in. I've been considering an eventual move, but I'd like to try to pay off a healthy chunk of my loans while I can keep my living expenses at a minimum.

A buddy of mine also wants me to help him film/possibly also be a writer for the first season of a television show he recently wrote the pilot of and found an investor for so I'm likely going to be doing that in my spare time (won't be getting much sleep for a couple months). Other than that, I've been hitting up small indie film festivals, trying to get to know people, make friends, etc. I'm still early in my career, but my goal has always been to make one of my hobbies my job and so far I'm pretty happy with the path I've chosen.

Sounds like you are going down the right path. I will give you the same warning I give everyone in your position. Be VERY wary of shooting weddings. The money is so good that it is really hard to quit doing them once you get started.

I just got an adapter for my eclair lenses to M 4/3s so my $500 lumix has a $7k lens on it...

Lol, hey man I had a mentor who must have told me 300+ times that it's "all about the glass." I really don't know much about shooting weddings currently cause I've never had much of an interest, but I might have to once I have some equipment just because it's difficult to find work elsewhere right now. I'll do my best to make sure not to let it get in the way of doing videos I really want to though.

I've been saving up to get a Canon t3i DSLR because I find the depth of field, the ability to shoot in lower light, and the 24p option pretty attractive. Then I'm planning on building my own shoulder rig and another dolly with some track (built one in college but it was for Panasonic DVX/HVX cameras or the Sony HDV one I used but it's really large and unwieldy). Some nice solid state lenses will come a little later after getting a bit of audio equipment.

Audiowise I suggest getting a Zoom H4n or R24. And buy them new on ebay via a seller like unique_squared_inc:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Zoom-H4n-H4-n-Porta ... 3366f85f7c

I found them by chance when looking for my H4n. Turns out they were in my town, sold it for MRC WITH accessories, and were quick to respond to any question I had.

Micwise, well thats up to you. I dont own any mics but a Heil PR40 is on the to buy list.

A Zoom H4n is actually exactly what I've been planning on getting. The guy I might be helping shoot the first season of his show with recommended them to me as well and I couldn't believe the price was as low as it is. Thanks for the link, that sounds like a good seller to do business with.

As for mics, I'm not sure yet what I'm going to get yet but I'll just get whatever I think suits my needs at the time. I was able to try out a ton of different mics while I had access at school and compare/contrast them, try them in different situations, etc. Probably going to eventually have several different types since I like playing with sound recording.

That is a great way to think about it. I still need to get a boom mic, I just havent done it yet. Bought an LED projector instead...
