which ones haven't you beaten? just curious.

re: mario land, can you objectively say that it's a great game/platformer? it's so slow and tedious. it feels like an atari game.

re: SMW2, i definitely rank it among my fav. games/platformers of all time. if i had to put it somewhere on my list i'd put it 3rd, right behind SMB3 and SMB1.

Um, lets see... I've mentioned on here multiple times that I can make it to like 8-3 or something in SMB but have never actually beaten the game somehow. Never beat SM64 since I don't like it much. Never beat Lost Levels.

I really don't get "slow" or "tedious"... Mario moves pretty quick, I can beat the game in under an hour. And the fact that each world in the game has unique look and enemies, and that there's also auto-scrolling shmup levels really breaks up any monotony.

Atari wished their games looked and played as good as Super Mario Land

I have to agree. While Super Mario Land 2 will forever remain the best 2D classical Mario game, Super Mario Land did so many things different, and the thing is...they worked. It's ok for game series to experiment a little. And it is proof to Nintendo's craftmanship, that a game which was sooooo different, is still a great game.

I've not played Galaxy 2 or Lost levels yet, but of the other 11:

1. Super Mario Sunshine
2. Super Mario Bros 2
3. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Super Mario Land
5. New Super Mario Bros
6. Super Mario 64
7. Super Mario Bros 3
8. New Super Mario Bros Wii
9. Super Mario Land 2
10. Super Mario World
11. Super Mario Bros.

Yeah, my list is kinda controversial.

I'm more surprised that New Super Mario Bros is so high. I enjoyed it a lot when it came out, cause new 2D Super Mario after 14 years, but after playing it again..... I find it very bland. A very, by the numbers Mario game, doing nothing differently. In a way NSMB is the anti SML.

Perhaps, but it did a lot of things I liked. The Mini mushroom and Blue shell were two of the series best power ups in my opinion, the bosses were fun, and had more variety than a lot of the odler mario games, even if they were mostly pretty easy. I also preferred the physics on those games, they felt right to me. When I try and play through World or 3, I always find I get a few stupid deaths early on because the physics feel a little off to me.

The only 2D Mario game I don't hate would be Mario Land 2: Legend of the Six Gold Coins (or whatever). So that leaves the 3Ds. Mario 64 holds a ton of nostalgia for me and I've beaten it AT LEAST a dozen times, but I think the Galaxy games are the best. With Super Mario 64 I felt like there weren't enough stars that played like a platformer. Also, the "find the star" structure is probably something better off ditched. I liked that the Galaxy games were more forgiving in many of their platforming sections, which to me encouraged experimentation and fun. They still should have done away with lives. There's just no reason for them in a Mario platformer like Galaxy. But yes, Galaxy 1 and 2 are my picks.
