There are some Japan-only GC games I've been meaning to try. I don't know very much about the whole GC modding scene, so I was hoping to get some advice as to what my best approach would be? Is playing back-ups any kind of option? I assume that would mean I'd have to install some kind of modchip and burn ISOs to mini-DVDs. Are there some 3rd party devices out there that would let me load back-ups or something?
I have a Wii also, if you softmod the Wii can you play GC back-ups with it somehow?
I've also read about the region-switch mod. This kind of seems like my best option, but if there are even easier methods, I'd obviously rather go with them. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: Question About Playing Japanese GC Games
there are soft-mods. And modchips. And replacement cases to allow fullsize DVDR's. Though the EASIEST way to play imports is to just buy a Free Loader disc. You can probably find one for around $30 or so. You load the disc, select "Japan," and then put in your import and that's it.
PS, if you decide to go softmod route, I have a SD Card Adapter on my trade list. And if you decide to go mod route, I have a GCN modchip on my trade list.

Oh. I'll just PM you then.

Keep in mind easiest is not the cheapest. Cheapest is softmodding a wii (unless you dont have one, but you do so...). I can't remember the specifics at this point but it is possible to play backups as well as retail JPN gamecube discs.
If you decide to go that route I will look up the related info for you.

I installed The Homebrew Channel on my Wii last night, but I haven't messed with trying to get GC stuff to run. If you know any info it'd be appreciated.
Re: Question About Playing Japanese GC Games
If you ever try a freeloader disc, the Japanese game will wipe your ntsc (not sure about PAL) memory card to make Japanese saves. I'm not sure if that will happen with other methods of getting it to play though.
Re: Question About Playing Japanese GC Games
I got a modded gamecube awhile back that has a nifty feature - a toggle switch that flips the machine between the NA bios and the JP bios. I don't know if that's a common mod or not but it was not a very expensive purchase.
The problem with running homebrew to get jp discs going on your wii is that there is always that small chance you might brick your system.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I found a guide here on installing the region switch and it seems like a pretty simple thing to do.
