my HOPE is that they're 3rd answer is actually true. Which is to say, they really don't know if anything was compromised, but they're looking into it.

It's possible, but it really depends on what kind of software the consoles offer more than how the companies present themselves. If Nintendo's new console goes in the same direction Nintendo has been going in lately (trying to have mass appeal, even to non-gamers), I don't think Sony has much to worry about. Wii and PS3/360 are kind of different markets all together, honestly.

True. But if Nintendo starts catering to the hardcore gamer again, Sony could be setting itself up to be marginalized out. It all depends on Nintendo getting those third parties on board again and whether or not Sony can repair its repuation.

I agree. I think of the Wii as like the "living room" console. Me and my wife play lightgun games on it, and y'know some Wii Sports or whatever. And she's been playing some GameCube and VC games on it too. But we probably use it to stream Netflix more than anything else. It's just kind of an entertainment device for us I guess.

Whereas I think of my PS3 more as like "oh shit, I wanna get THAT game!"

So basically the Wii is what Sony wanted the PS3 to be originally?

Personally I hope all this shit teaches Sony some humility. I've long since been annoyed at Sony's arrogance (just check my posts going back several years on the topic). It's almost like they want people to hate them. I find it incredulous that people still like and are even fans of Sony after all the shit they've pulled this generation. They managed to not only have a system that has gotten WORSE as the generation moved forward when all their competitors have gotten better, but also the worst secured system to boot.

I've voiced my view- all three console manufacturers have made some serious mistakes this gen. But if I was forced to pick a favorite I would pick Sony. Why? Well for starters the claim that they have gotten worse is subjective at best. In fact, they've added much to the console since I've purchased it:

-Netflix
-Trophies
-PSP Connectivity and Remote Play
-XMB in Game
-Home
-Hulu and countless other video services such as MLB.TV
-An option for a premium service which includes cool things like cloud saving and "free" games or advance demos

They've taken away:
-OtherOS
-some USB peripheral functionality

I'm happy to trade the list of additions for the list of subtractions - I feel that the PS3 has indeed improved over the life of the system. Removing BC doesn't really count - that's like saying the PS2 Phat "lost" the hard drive compatibility when they put out the Slim model...removing BC allowed them to lower the cost and create a new SKU. It seems to have worked.

Oh, and Sony easily has the best exclusives for both downloadable games and retail games this generation. That wasn't true when I bought it - but it has become so over the past few years. I don't know if that's what you are accounting for in your "getting better"/"getting worse" distinction, but that to me is part of a console aging well.

Feel free to be incredulous, but there's plenty of reasons to like Sony and be excited to see what the company will do next. I hope all three manufacturers learn from their many mistakes this gen, but this "Sony is more evil than everyone" shtick is wearing thin.

I don't think they are more evil.

Just more incompetent. How else do you explain losing the market share they had going into this iteration of consoles?

I pretty much agree with what dsheinem is saying.

Yeah Sony are dicks, but Nintendo and Microsoft are pretty much dicks too. Every major company/corporation are dicks. That's just the way it is.

But regardless of what the brand name console I'm buying is, whatever console gives me games like Demon's Souls is the one I'm going to support.

Basically my only major complaint with Sony this gen. They obviously pushed the PS3 to be some universal entertainment system and haven't backed up the games with as much support as they did during the PS1/PS2 runs, and to me it kind of shows.

That said, it's not a huge issue and just like dsheinem stated above, I think it's far more easy for me say I have problems with all three of the big consoles right now. They're all pretty flawed compared to previous generations and in the end, what matters most is the games... not the consoles themselves, as brunoath said. I don't pick favorites anymore.
