I dunno. I think the main reason that a lot of people buy Nintendo systems in the first place is because of their kid or family friendly games. So I find it difficult to believe that Nintendo will somehow be able to "go hardcore" and continue being as successful as they have been.
Also, if we're talking about an HD console more powerful than the PS3 and 360 that features some sort of stream device that sends signal to and from a controller with a built-in high-resolution screen... we're talking about a lot of money - at least $350+ I bet.
And with the 360 sitting comfortably at the moment at $199, and the PS3 most likely seeing another price cut within a years time... a new console by Nintendo could be a very tough sell with a bunch of highly-anticipated games still coming out for the PS3/360. And then when you add in the equation that PS3 and 360 both have motion-control capabilities now.. it looks even more like a difficult climb for Nintendo.
I guess we'll have to wait and see what Nintendo has up their sleeve. But for their sake, I'd say it needs to be something truly incredible that the other HD systems do not already offer, if it's going to compete.

Couldn't you make the same arguments about the 360 when it launched compared to the PS2? Don't discount the shiny factor of new technology.Weekend_Warrior wrote:And with the 360 sitting comfortably at the moment at $199, and the PS3 most likely seeing another price cut within a years time... a new console by Nintendo could be a very tough sell with a bunch of highly-anticipated games still coming out for the PS3/360. Every time Nintendo announces a new system, or (___insert Nintendo franchise here___) game, it's met with incredible skepticism. And yet, every time, it manages to re-invent itself and sell ass-loads of units to fan-boys and naysayers alike. 2012 will be no different.

Don't be so sure. We're in deep recession now at $4+ per gallon for gas. Food prices are also on the rise.Rurouni_Fencer wrote:2012 will be no different.
Consumer purchases are going to start dropping dramatically very quickly.
There will always be the fanboys, techno-geeks, and soccer moms that buy new products at launch. But the sales are certainly not going to stay steady. Especially if it has a mediocre lineup of games at launch, like the 3DS had.
People are getting smarter. They're waiting for reviews and price drops, etc. They also look to the used game market a lot of times, as well. Which is why some industry insiders and companies like EA were so bitter about used games and stores like Gamestop for awhile - they're cutting into their pie.

The stock market has been doing well lately. If I decide to buy a Cafe, it will probably be a month or two after launch. I made a mistake buying the Japanese 3DS on launch day and paid some ridiculous price for it. I figured it would be in super high demand and sold out for a long time but that wasn't the case. Now it's easily available for MSRP. I'm done with buying new game consoles on launch day. >_>

What does that have to do with the average blue-collar American family? Absolutely nothing.Inazuma wrote:The stock market has been doing well lately.

You have a point. Isn't it true that most people actually have less than $0? I guess saving and investing wouldn't be possible if you owe more money than you have.Weekend_Warrior wrote:What does that have to do with the average blue-collar American family? Then again, if most people have less than $0, if a game console costs $100 or $600, it wouldn't make any difference since you couldn't buy either.
Someone with more knowledge on this subject, please correct me if I am wrong about this.
I used to have about -$6000 at one point in my life. I didn't buy even one single video game at all until I paid off my debt completely.

Whenever I get into debt, I usually try to get out of it as quickly as possible.
I don't think I've ever owed money for longer than a few weeks.
I really don't like being in debt, guess it's from seeing my mom have to deal with all that. It's also why I'm weary about getting loans for anything.

Agree. Everyone is always saying this or that about Nintendo. But in the end just like the famous online meme... It is a decent reflection of the general state of the economy. It's imperfect, but from a very high level a good stock market usually means the economy is doing better.Weekend_Warrior wrote:What does that have to do with the average blue-collar American family? Plus, you can be in debt and still live a full life. I'm in debt $220,000 and it hasn't slowed down my video game purchases.
