Once I finish getting Golds in the Fury WipeOut HD campaign. I think I'll play through Wolfenstein again. Such an underrated game.

Half-Life can run on a toaster. The game's 13 years old.dsheinem wrote:It doesn't take much to play the original Half-Life. If you have a computer made in the last decade you are probably fine. I would STRONGLY recommend starting with HL1.MrEco wrote:Would a Wikipedia summary suffice? I'm asking because I'll probably never have a computer good enough to play Half-Life without buying a new computer and that's not gonna happen anytime soon. However, I've been putting off buying the Orange Box for the desire to play the games in chronological order.
While you can play the Orange Box before the original Half-Life, I'd advise against it mainly because I like the original and it's expansions better than Half-Life 2. I was hoping for something similar with the Half-Life 2 Episodes. Or at least for Adrian Shepard to return.

Ah yes, the expansions are really awesome for HL1 as well, pretty long too. I'll never forget Blue Shift and Opposing Force were the examples of what I thought DLC would be like this generation, boy... was that the worst assumption I've ever made.

HL1 came out in 1998. Minimum specs only asked for a Pentium 133, 24 megs of RAM, and a (non hardware 3D) video card capable of putting out 16 bit 640x480. Recommended was still only a Pentium 166 and 32 megs of RAM and some sort of hardware accelerated 3D card. Even if you were making all of your Racket posts from the library or something, a week worth of watching Freecycle or Craigslist would get you a PC that would run it for anywhere from free to $20.MrEco wrote:Would a Wikipedia summary suffice? If you have a Dreamcast you can burn the superior beta of HL1. Some people just can't bother playing games on PCs and I respect that.

I've tried playing plenty of games older than Half-Life that either wouldn't work or had huge problems that made them not worth playing (Like a terrible framerate). Maybe it's not my computers fault since I'm a dumbass when it comes to computers. That's entirely possible. It's a shame since the platform looks to have quite a lot of great games but ultimately I can't really do PC games.
Anyways thanks for all the feedback everyone. I'll try to see if I can get a cheap copy of the PS2 version of Half-Life. Last time I looked online it was like $80 brand new. If that doesn't work I think I'll be fine skipping it.

I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

I saw a used one CIB for about $15 at GameStop the other day. Amazon has them used starting at $10.MrEco wrote:I've tried playing plenty of games older than Half-Life that either wouldn't work or had huge problems that made them not worth playing (Like a terrible framerate). I finished Portal 2 today, and my initial observations about it being very much the same as the first game (which was a nice surprise then, but not enough for a sequel) were largely overcome with some of the gimmicks and puzzles found in the later half of the game. The humor, the ending, the music, and a lot of the aesthetic elements really shined - there's a lot of good stuff in the game and I would certainly recommend it. A very enjoyable, high quality release. It took me 8 hours, so it's an average length for a FPS game.
Just to nitpick...
One thing that did bother me is that I felt that the puzzles were by in large much easier than in the first game. Specifically, I thought that there was a need in the first game to both figure out where to place portals AND to have to do some fairly demanding acrobatics with shooting, flying, and/or jumping at the same time. That second component was missing in the sequel - those "twitch" puzzles that were a big part of some of those later levels in the first game were gone. Maybe some appreciate that, but to me it feels like something to blame on the heavy emphasis on the console port of the game, as they would be almost impossible to pull off with a gamepad. Anyway, that's just a small thing.
I'll look to try out the multiplayer soon. Anyone here looking to try the PC version co-op?

Just curious, what are your PC's specs?MrEco wrote:I've tried playing plenty of games older than Half-Life that either wouldn't work or had huge problems that made them not worth playing (Like a terrible framerate).
