sega rant

Post by mas »

I thought that I would be done with going back into old retro systems. I just picked up a sega genesis with 18 games and I had bought 2 sega cd's off of ebay and the sellers both said the system worked. I get one in the mail and no go. The second comes in and nothing. I'm pissed off by now. I could of used that money for mortal kombat for the ps3 and now I wonder why I even went back into getting a genesis again.
I already own a modded xbox with all the genny I need and I also have genesis collection for ps3 but it's just not the same as having the system and cartridges. And the other thing is I cant games like zombies ate my neighbors or tmnt hyperstone or castlevania bloodlines on a collection disk and my xbox is starting to die on me. I am just ranting and I do love the sega but Damn all this trouble to find games again and having bad experience with ebay is really making me think I should just leave the retro stuff alone and stick with the current systems.

retro stuff are fine as long as there are not alot of moving parts.
The cartridge base console usually works fine , but sadly you cant say the same aobut the cd base console. Any cd base console back int he early 90's usually crapped out by now.

Sorry to hear that you got a shit deal from a shitty dealer. Maybe you could try to return the product because if he stated that it works on the ebay auction and it doesnt im sure there is probably a way you can get your money back.

What doesn't work about the two Sega CD units? Maybe we can help you to get one of them working.

Ziggy,
I bought a 3 in 1 nes/snes/genesis1 adapter. I have both sega cd units and the 1st one I got I replaced the fuse with the youtube turtorial. I got no power and the second one I recieved today I used the same ac cord and no power either. I tested the pug and there is power in the ac adapter and it is a 9volt dc plug so I dont know what's up.
I would love to get this going and get rid of my xbox because all I use it for is arcade and genesis roms. I would much be happier with the genesis and the ps3 so if you can help and give advice that's great.

Well for starters you could try cleaning the pins of the connector on the side of the Genesis. You can even try cleaning the female pins on the Sega CD. I'm talking about the connection that plugs the Genesis into the Sega CD. I've read that if those pins are dirty, it can stop the systems from communicating and the Sega CD wont boot up. You can clean them the same exact way you'd clean a cartridge and a cart slot.

Also, you know you can't have a Genesis cart inserted, right? Dumb question, I know, but I always like to rule out that over looked things.

I think I have the same exact AC adapter that you have. I got it off eBay. Mine works great.

If you have time shop locally. old thrift stores and fleamarkets

I find genesis's (or is is genesi? :) ) all the time, albeit in pieces. You can snag a console for less than $15 if youre lucky. At least thats where I live. I've gotten lucky

The base console are usually fine, its just the a/c plugs that mess up, try and find some extra ones just in case.

If the console is dead, at least you didn't pay anymore for shipping. you can toss it to the trash or try to clean it like others have said here.

they are pretty indestructable those genesis.

I have never owned a sega cd base console tho, I do find them sometimes, but when I see them and know that they need extra cables and plugs, I leave them there.

I have a CDX as well but, the CD works when it wants to.

dont ever be ashamed of your nostalgia trip! buy what makes you happy, and have fun finding those games

If the consoles don't work try and get into contact with the sellers, you might be able to work something out. If they don't respond positively I'm pretty sure you can work it out with PayPal as the sellers said they work when they in fact don't.
I'm absolutely no expert on the issue but I believe its called PayPal Buyer Protection, don't quote me on that. Maybe another member can verify this?

I agree with this, the less mechanical the better.I have repaired few Mega cd probs but just fuse problems that are quite simple to repair and i also agree the Genesis console itself is usually very reliable, another option to check is a bad joint on a dc jack so try waggling the dc jack when inserted.
This is why a lot of people are just happy with emulation like me although i do have a small collection of stuff on a few systems.

The model 1s are the real problem. I've never seen a working one on eBay. In my experience when it comes to cd based stuff on eBay if its listed as untested, that means its broken, but if they listed it as working, and you get easily get them both working file a complaint, hell even if you can get it working, the fact it the seller lied, it wasn't working when you got it, so you are owed some amount of compensation. I've asked sellers multiple times for partial refunds for a few tens of dollars when something wasn't as described, but I don't want to go through the hassle of a full return. Most of the time the seller will oblige.

I just want to comment on a few things. I did cleaned the contacts and I still have nothing. I also love the genesis and retro games. I wanted to just stick with current systems but I love retro. It's fun there are only 3 buttons or six and its not hard to just pick up and play. I have psone games but 3d psone games on a flat screen don't hold up to 2d games like sonic or battletoads or turtles. The two models that I picked up was the 2nd model and I guess I'm just going to have to just stick with a genesis and maybe buy a 32x if I see one cheap. Im proud to have spent money on genesis games today like vectorman and gunstar heroes than pick up mortal kombat for the ps3 and I still have 40.00 in my pocket. It suck though I cant get a sega cd I would love to play lords of thunder or snatcher or even robo eleste. Man the music was alot better than the games for today.
