Top 25 GameBoy & GameBoy Color games

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

Step aside, noiseredux! It's my turn to talk GameBoy!

After the successful Top 25 Powerpak Killer Apps list I wrote a while back, I've received many requests to do another such list, and this one is dear to my heart.

Here's my top 25 GameBoy & GameBoy Color games list with my reasons for each. See if your favorite makes the list! Hope you enjoy guys and gals!

if I were to do something like this, I would combine the two libraries. At any rate, I agree with about half of yr choices.

Interesting pick on Star Trek 25th, I actually like that game a lot. And I feel like it's one that most people have never tried. (PS the word is "shmup" not "shump")

Good list, I own about probably 2/3 of the games on your list. And probably about 4 more of the ones I don't own, I would like to if the price was right heheh

One day I hope to own Shantae. :(

The list was a very enjoyable read! I'll have to hunt down some of those games since I'm trying to build up my original GB/GBC collection.

Thanks dude. I'm glad you liked it. I too felt Star Trek 25th Anniversary on the GB was underrated. In fact half the games on the list could be considered so, even the Pokemon spin-offs such as Puzzle Challenge and the two TCG games.

It's silly to dismiss these games on account of how childish they may appear. The Pokemon TCG is actually one of the better card games out there and Puzzle Challenge is just Panel de Pon with a new skin.

I plan on writing a runner's up list to cover some of the other gems I didn't mention, such as Gargoyle's Quest.

The great thing about GameBoy is outside of a very select titles, most games can be found for dirt cheap. I listed in every listing the price range you can usually expect to pay for a loose copy. GameBoy collecting won't break the bank, and the ones that would are worth playing unlike rare games for other systems *caughcaughaction52coughcough*

hey it's nice to see people actually read my coverage! 8000 words later it's nice to see you didn't just skim it over 8) Good luck on the Shantae hunt! It's without a doubt the best game you'll find.

I don't know about that. I mean Goeman and Trip World sure, but a bulk of yr pics would show up on a lot of BEST OF lists. Actually, to be fair I'm not really sure how you're choosing. What do you mean by "Top 25" really? I'm guessing you're trying to pick what you consider to be the 25 games that all GB collectors should have. Is that sort of true (cheating slightly by grouping 2 MMX games together, 2 Zelda's together, multiple Pokemons, etc  ). But if that were the case, my list of 25 would be quite different than yours. I'm not a big fan of Pokemon Puzzle for one thing. Though I'm just not a big Panel De Pon fan in general. I think there's better GBC puzzlers. Hexcite comes to immediate mind for instance. I also think you included a lot of Mega Man for one list. Though you already heard that from your NES list. And it's your personal opinion. You're obviously a big fan of the series. No fault in keeping it real. I'm not so great at picking a TOP 25 though -- to just try to come up with a list like that would be different depending which day of the week you asked me. I'm better at coming up with specific lists -- like if I were asked for favorite GB or GBC puzzle games, I could come up with that sort of list.

I think I fall into the same category as you, Noise. I couldn't ever see myself being able to list a "top whatever" for any console. I tend to enjoy quite a lot and find it difficult to list them in such a manner. I am much better at informational lists such as "list of imports for this console."

yeah I guess I'm better at making lists with specific criteria. But I'm not sure how to just say TOP GAMES because I'm not really sure how to define "Top."

Your list has a bunch of fun games on it, no doubt. But you eat up the entire thing by not grouping iterations of a series.

Half your list is Zelda, Megaman, Mario and Pokemon. Yeah, each one of those games was great and mega kudos to you for such energetic descriptions. But most of these games also used almost identical engines and could/should be grouped together to make more room. As it is, the list seems a tad shallow.

I think your list would benefit should you either pick your favorite and honorable mention the rest, raise the number of entries, or split the list between GBC and GB, which you should anyway as they are completely different pieces of hardware. Or, in a pinch, just say that these are YOUR top 25 games.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
