Should I buy these two untested Sega CDXs for $83?

Post by Croooow! »

I bid on these not expecting to win and what do you know, the first and second highest bidders backed out so I got a second chance offer. I've been looking for a CDX for some time and think my odds are pretty good that at least one works. If not there are a couple places in town that to retro game repairs. What do you guys think? If I buy them I'd likely sell one on here.

I say no. You're already down the AC Adapter which is harder to find separate than the system is. Unless you already have one and REALLY need the parts, I'd let this one pass.

Nosir. (Edit .. welllllll .. it "works", but it will destroy the system.)

You need 9V @ 1.5a. Radio Shack sells an appropriate adapter with the appropriate sized plug for around $20-$30. Easy peasy!

I'm looking online and found this, supposedly a couple people are claiming they can work with the CDX:

Anyone ever heard of these?

I thought the CDX needed a 9.5V DC adapter. I've heard the Model 2 Genesis plug work but makes the unit run hot.

I don't trust anything sold on eBay as untested. It is way too easy for someone to take something they know is broken, throw away the AC adapter, then say that it is untested because they don't have the adapter.

If you think you'll get lucky or think you can fix one then it may be worth it, but be prepared for the worst.

Maybe I would be willing to take more chances if I had a bigger gaming budget. :(

Any 9v - 10v adapter that outputs 1.5a (this is the important part) will work, provided you have the right size plug to fit in the CDX. The Genesis adapter only outputs 0.85a.

Yes, the Sima SUP-60 works perfectly.
