Can Anyone Fix A Dreamcast?

Post by pankakes123 »

My sega dreamcast has been pooping on me lately. It boots up and everything on the main menu is working fine, however it will not read discs. I was wondering if any of you have experience with fixing a dreamcast that will not read discs, (most likely a problem with the laser), and if you can fix a dreamcast please let me know how much I will have to pay for your repairs. I really can't go any higher than 20 dollars cause I'm broke right now. Also, I do not ship outside of the US, so don't ask to fix it if you are not in the United States. If the repair turns out to be more pricey than 20 dollars because you end up needing to buy a new replacement laser, let me know and I may be able to go a little higher.

Thanks :)

You can probably try a simple fix on your own. The problem you are having sounds like the laser is getting worn out. That problem is especially bad with DC's that have spent years running bootleg discs, as those discs force the laser to work double time to read data.

This method called 'pot tweaking' can buy your DC a little more life. Maybe.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I fix my own but that is just because I buy bundles and always end up with extra stuff so I just started to take broken ones apart. A lot of times all they need is to be dusted out and the laser cleaned. They are pretty simple to take apart and clean. I am not interested in fixing anyones though because I don't want to deal with someone if it ever breaks again.

If you have $20-$30 to spend you should be able to find one on ebay or craigslist pretty easily. There is a local game store by me that has a ton of Dreamcast. If you just wanted the system and none of the cords/controllers or anything they might be around your price range with shipping. Here is their website.

Yeah, DCs are very cheap.

Also, if your DC's laser is dead, check out this thread to possibly squeeze some more use out of an otherwise useless system:
