what have been your gaming "milestones"?

Post by geozeldadude »

so i finished one of my long-time video gaming goals somewhat recently, which was to play/replay all the entries in the main mario series (see http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... &sk=t&sd=a). i have a lot of other similar video gaming goals with other series, and am 1 game shy from playing all the main metroid games. after that will be the zelda and mario kart games, although it'll take me a bit longer to finish up those. i also want to play through various top 100 games lists, including the ones my main mag nintendo power has put out over the years.

just wondering if i'm the only one with these stupid goals, and if not what your gaming milestones have been/currently are.

When Mega Man 9 came out, I bought it and played through the entire series in order, saving MM9 for last.

I had this one stubborn NES cartridge that took like half an hour to get working. I cleaned, I wiggled, I held reset, I blew dust out of it until I was almost woozy from oxygen deprivation.

Finally, FINALLY, I got it working. I never felt so proud to be a gamer as I did that day.

...Too bad the game was Back to the Future II&III.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

It's not really a milestone, but finishing Pokemon Gold and hearing that credits theme -as a 10 year old- really did it for me. The game was hard, especially when I didn't understand about levelling my Pokemon equally.

that reminds me of one of my other goals, which is to play through a fire emblem game enough times to unlock all the support conversations. that'll take a while. ;)

I have playing and collecting milestones.

Active for playing: All mario (primary titles - not mario party/kart stuff) games. Last up is Mario Galaxy 2 and then i'm set and awaiting a new title. I'm up to speed on all the Zelda games (not including handhelds) with the exception of Majora's Mask and Four Swords - i've given up on that game (MM) 1/2 a dozen times over the years. I want to love it, but I get stuck so often that I hate it.

Collecting Goals - I am 3 titles away from the Virtual Boy Library and about 8 titles away from my wants for US and JP Saturn respectively.

...and inspired by this thread: I really want to experience the gba link capabilities. I have the games for it, I have the cables, just haven't gotten into it yet, but now I will. Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles, Zelda 4 Swords, and for fun, Pacman Versus.

When I started playing more ScummVM games after playing the Secret of Monkey remake on Xbox Live, I made a vow to beat them all without any outside help, guides, faqs or videos. I was determined to figure out every puzzle on my own. I accomplished that goal with Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island 2:Lechuck's Revenge and The Curse of Monkey Island. I got stuck on the very first Sam and Max game though and eventually just gave up on it and haven't really played any more ScummVM games since.

Other than that, I have played and beaten every single Mega Man X game not counting portable ones, though I did play Maverick Hunter X on the PSP

As far as collecting goes, I have this crazy desire to build up a library of every notable SNES game there is with box, instructions and plastic box proctectors for them all. Should I ever accomplish such an insane goal, I would proceed to do the same with other cartridge systems like the NES, Genesis and Neo Geo

Using guides on Adventure games is so pointless it is no funny. You might as well just watch a Let Play on youtube. You are meant to get stuck, its the whole idea, its like using a guide for Portal, whats the point!

I agree with you, but I have heard many people claim that it is IMPOSSIBLE to beat those early Lucasarts games without a guide. Once I heard that, it was decided. I would take on that challenge and got through four of the most classic titles in that genre with no help whatsoever

EDIT: Moral of the story, don't ever tell me something is impossible

That's retarded. Who ever said that is just wrong.

LucasArts are known for there adventures being user friendly compared to Sierra, you cant get into dead ends, and you can NEVER be stuck, as in you can't use an item incorrectly. It is why they took the genre so far ahead (and the use of mouse rather than text based systems like Sierra were using.)

I beat most of the LA backlog of adventure games when I was younger than 10.

In Sierra game you can use items and be stuck because you need them later, you can die, there are countless dead ends, you can do things at the wrong time.

I think I restarted KQ5 more than 10 times with my old man before we got in the habit of having 20 save points and different points we considered 'safe'.
