Genesis with CD and 32X.... So many power bricks! Solutions?

Post by Ninja_Dentist »

I really hate the old power bricks. Why were they so damn big? Anyway, my Genesis/Sega CD/32X with its three power bricks takes up so much damn outlet space that I have been putting off playing my newly acquired games because I rearrange my entire setup just so I can plug the monster bricks in to the power strip. I guess I can unhook the 32X if it comes down to it, but my question is this: Are there any sort of alternative power cords I can use (that won't put my system in jeopardy)? If not, anybody have any clever solutions?

You could put short extension cords from Power Supply to a Power Strip.

Although I don't know what hazards that might cause, if any.

None as far as I can tell, I've done that for years. I have a ton of guitar effect pedals which each require an AC adapter like the Genesis/SCD/32X. I have something like 4 or 5 of them plugged into a cheap extension cord for years at a time, never had a problem. They'll be warm, but since most of the time the pedals aren't on and drawing power, I really don't think it's that big of a deal. Much like the GEN/SCD/32X setup, it'll only be powered on for maybe a few hours at a time.

Get a short white extension cord like this one:

The kind that has three (2 on one side, 1 on the other) female plugs. You can get them in any drug store, department, hardware, grocery, etc. You can even get them short (like 3 feet) if you don't wanna mess with the wire slack. This alone will let you plug to AC adapters into it.

Then get one of these:

I have something similar, you can plug 3 AC adapters into this adapter alone. More commonly though, you'll find this style:

You can only plug two of those beefy AC adapters into that one, but you'll still have the 3rd plug from the extension cord to use.

If this kind of setup actually IS some kind of a hazard, I've yet to see any proof of that from my own experience.

A better option:

Get a new surge protector. They make some specifically for those damn wall warts. Example:

I might give the little extension cord a try. It seems significantly safer than the solution I came up with when I was 12 and wanted my NES, SNES, Genesis, TV, VCR, Stereo, lamp, and god knows what else all plugged in at the same time in my room and had a surge protector plugged into another surge protector to accommodate everything. My speakers would pop when I turned my overhead light on.

I want to eventually get a couple of these, but I'll probably wait until I move into a house and have enough space for a game room.

I have a couple cords similar to this, except the plug has an outlet on the back of it in addition to the one on the end of the cord allowing for two separate devices to be plugged in. I can't remember what they are called, the store I bought them from no longer carries them, and I can't find them online. I should have snatched up a ton of them when i had the chance....

Guys, the answer is the Power Squid.

The ends are staggered just right to accomodate large AC adaptors.

That is awesome. What a great idea.

I'll be picking up a couple of those later on.

I came across this site a little bit ago when I was searching for a solution too. It looks like it might be a possibility? Basically allows you to shape the strip as you want, and looks like it could accomodate the power bricks.
