Can never go wrong with Golden Axe or Streets of RAAAAAGGEEEEEE!!!

Also some fun games I like for Genesis are:
Columns
Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition
Gunstar Heroes
Shining Force
Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV)

I'm like the Dos Equis guy as far as horizontal shmups go, in that I don't normally play horizontal shmups, but when I do, it's Thunder Force IV.
NES, SNES, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GCN, Wii, PS3, 360, GB, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, PSP 3000, and 3DS XL

I REALLY want to get Thunder Force IV! The soundtrack to that game kicks-ass. And also Shining Force because I love me my Strategy RPGs.

Do the HD Genesis model 1's really have better sound than the regular Genesis 1's?

All you need for better sound is a cheap cord from RadioShack. It's what I use. I'm not sure what it's called, but it has one end that plugs into the headphone jack on the front, and the other end has the white & red cords that you see in A/V cables.

I'm using one of those right now. I bought it because I wanted stereo sound, didn't realize it improved the overall sound quality beyond that too.

That's all I meant, the Stereo Sound, which is a HUGE improvement over the mono. Just compare with your normal A/V cords.

Oh, I thought you meant the sound was "higher res" through the headphone jack or something. But yeah, stereo is a big improvement.

And that name ain't no joke. Completely destroys the other games when it comes to difficulty, haha. Still love it though.
