Starting a Genesis Collection - Suggestions?

Post by Sideroller »

Hey guys! I own a Sega Genesis passed down to me from two older brothers. I used to play on the system a lot as a kid - but we only ever owned a few titles for it and half of them are sports titles.

What I do have on it currently are as follows:
-All three original Sonics (but the 3rd and Sonic and Knuckles are w/o a case)
-Maximum Carnage (Spiderman)
-Some NHL game, NBA Jam, and another Football game...(I'm not into sports games hence the vagueness)
-Soldiers of Fortune
-Jurassic Park

Recently I just picked up Phantasy Star III for about 8 dollars. It's a little beat up and there's tape over carts artwork unfortunately - but I'm more interested in playing these games rather than showing them off in some glass case. :P

The place where I got Phantasy Star III also had Golden Axe and Altered Beast which I remembered hearing about, but I didn't decide to buy them yet.

So do you guys think I should pick 'em up? What other games for the system are worth picking up? I'm only interested in the most playable/fun games on the system - not necessarily the most rare.

I have been interested in getting Shining Force and Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV) as well.

Thanks! :D

EDIT: I also just remembered I own Sub-Terrania and Star Trek: TNG. Neither of which I was ever terribly crazy about, so I might just sell them off.

Well u should decided wether u want the games to lose or box.
When i started my gen collection i didnt really care for boxes and now that i have like 150 or so games i started to want boxes for it.

I dont care for Manuels but the boxes are great due to the graphics cover and detail int he back. It just makes me want to play it more from looking at the box.

But here is one suggestion for a great action game for genny :)

If your into beat em ups/hack n slashes, I would get Streets of Rage and Golden axe. Also, I hear that Ristar is good for more platforming (besides sonic) and Contra Hard Corps for run n guns.

Also try to invest in a Sega Genesis High Definition Model for better sound
and possibly an S-video Mod for better picture clarity.

You should definitely go back and pickup Golden Axe and Altered Beast, good times with those games. All Golden Axe games are pretty solid, but I liked 1-2 most. That said, the Streets of Rage series tears it to pieces! But good luck finding a copy of 3. First two are great though, especially 2.

Castlevania Bloodlines is definitely a must.

Definitely pickup Thunder Force IV. It is personally my all time favorite horizontal shmup. The graphics and music completely push the system to the limits. Thunder Force III is very good too and has a bit more content than AC (the SNES port).

Shinobi 3: The Revenge of Shinobi, legendary stuff here and also some of the best music you'll find from the Genesis.

Ristar is an excellent one hit wonder, great stuff.

Vectorman 1-2, nothing really needs to be said here. Classics!

Earthworm Jim 1-2 were awesome on the Genesis, the first game actually had an extra level over the SNES version and more music. The Genesis version is gritty stuff that really fits the game.

Toejam & Earl 1-2 are pretty cool.

Was the Lost Vikings on the Genesis? Not sure, if they were... definitely get them.

Flashback: The Quest For Identity is very cool if you like these sort of puzzle solving, intricate sidescrollers. Think I played it first back on the Genesis a long time ago.

yes there is guide on how to mod the genny for s-video , i have tried and failed and of frustration my genny died.

So now i just have the Genesis HD Graphic model one with just av cables out. I wish i was technical enough to do the mod. :(

I have seen picture comparison and the picture is really sharp

Phantasy Star III is kind of known as the low point in the original Phantasy Star games... however that does not mean it's not worth playing. It's kind of like how Sakura Taisen V is the low point of that franchise but yet when it came out here got editor's choice awards from various reviewers. It is just noticeably different from the others.

Golden Axe is great, I don't think you could really go wrong with that one. Its even better if you have friends to play with. Altered Beast is a classic but yet many people have mixed opinions of it. I personally enjoy the game, if its cheap I'd recommended picking it up. You could do a lot worse than Altered Beast.

The Shining Force games are really good. If you like SRPGs, like Fire Emblem I would definitely pick them up, but they aren't the cheapest games to get for your gen.

Really fun ones that you can pick up for a good price are Vectorman and Ecco the Dolphin. Vectorman is my favorite run and gun game ever. Ecco is kind of abstract and unusual, not much else is quite like it. if you're up for a challenge they also have you covered.

Yeah my issue would be, could I find a model 1 in that near mint like condition? Haha. I have a model 2, but I just love those classic ones (seemed like my friends and family always had them growing up), so I'll get one someday... and maybe attempt to mod it out.

Back to suggestions, I'll definitely second NiGHTYNiGHTS with the Ecco games. However, they are indeed BRUTAL. I beat the Sega CD version of Ecco 1 several weeks back and it was a beast, the hilarious part is that the Sega CD version gives you checkpoints... the Genesis version does not. The final stage is the nastiest thing I've ever seen, it's one of those "moving" levels that's pure trial and error with instant deaths everywhere and goes on for like 10 minutes. But if you beat the game, damn was it satisfying conquering that one. Thinking of playing the harder Genesis version someday gives me shivers... haha.

Also probably one of the most epic games I've ever played. Anyone who's gotten far probably knows what I mean. Man was it WAY out there.
