Is one version of a Pokemon game usually more popular?

Post by BoringSupreez »

Every Pokemon game that comes out for portable systems comes in two versions, each a different color. And what I'm wondering is, is one color usually more popular, and therefore easier to find used later on, than the other color? Did Pokemon blue or red sell better? Which costs more?

Yeah, the colors typically sell differently. Red outsold Blue, Gold outsold Silver, Ruby outsold Sapphire, LeafGreen outsold FireRed, Diamond outsold Pearl, SoulSilver has appeared to outsell HeartGold (though it's pretty close), and White appears to be outselling Black.

I believe that Blue sold better. Not sure on that. Usually they cost the same, except one weird case at a best buy I was at where Sapphire was 27 and Ruby was 35.

recently, the third installments of each gen have been more popular than the first two. Emerald is better than Ruby/Sapphire because it has mountains more content, and Platinum is considered a drastic improvement to Diamond/Pearl because they sped the game up significantly (Combat in DP was so SLOOOOOOWWWWWWW, and even on max text speed conversations took forev- SAVING A LOT OF DATA!).

If you want to buy games used, here's a runthrough I guess

Gen I- Red and Blue both sold boatloads. It'll be easier to find them than Yellow
*Remake- I've found more wild copies of FireRed than I have LeafGreen
Gen II- Because of the internal clock, GSC games have a bad habit of cart battery going kaput. Crystal's probably your best bet if you aren't good at replacing batteries.
*Remake- They're still both new, so the price hasn't dropped that much. I think SS sold more
Gen III- Get Emerald if you can. I've seen copies of Sapphire in the wild the most though.
Gen IV- Platinum. No question. It doesn't matter that you can find mountains upon mountains of used diamond/pearl copies, those were discarded by their former owners for a reason. Get. Platinum.

I read this interesting argument (another forum) that the 'boy' colours generally outsell the 'girl' colours, as by and large, more guys game than girls. I mean, it will start a discussion on what's considered boyish and girlish, but I did find it intriguing enough. Like say, Red, which is an aggressive colour, outsold Blue, which is much calmer, generally young men are more aggressive than girls, so they'd go with red and vice versa. I find it really curious anyways, regardless of it merit. There's more guy gamers than girl gamers, so there'd be more boys growing up and discarding their games thus it plays into the above posts of more manlier colours being available in the wild. Mind, I find Ruby far, far more prevalent used than Sapphire and Emerald.

The pokemon on the boxart might also have a lot to do with it. I know I bought Red and Silver, back in the day cause I thought Charizard and Lugia looked cooler. On the other hand I bought pearl, cause fewer people bought it, and I thought its exclusive pokemon would be worth more online.

makes sense. I mean traditionally the color to paint a baby boy's nursery is red.

I think it has a lot to do with the exclusives in each version, which kind of ties into the box art in the later games.

Personally, I picked:

Red - easy choice, it had a dragon on the front. As opposed to a turtle.
Silver - Lugia > Ho-Oh
Ruby - Kyroge and Groudon both kinda sucked, so it was the lesser of two evils.
Leafgreen - VENUSAUR!!!
Diamond - all my friends wanted pearl.
Black - all my friends wanted White and I kind of don't really care at this point.

Yeah, I've always seen it as this way. The only time this has ever changed is in Black and White, and that's because Zekrom is hella cooler than Reshiram.

I Got:

Red: Because blue was sold out XD
Gold: Because silver was sold out XD
Sapphire: because I like blue more than red?
LeafGreen: Because FireRed was sold out (I'm noticing a trend here ¬_¬)
Diamond: Because I like blue more than pink, and two of my friends were getting pearl
HeartGold: Because I got gold originally.
White: Because I was under the impression everyone would go for black :S.
