Did you try out New Vegas? I hated Oblivion and Fallout 3, but New Vegas wasn't too bad. Obsidian developed it instead of Bethesda so that probably helped... still very flawed for sure though. You can only hear the same 10 voice actors for so long before it gets old, lol, sadly I've heard that issue was even worse in earlier Bethesda games.

But yeah, story/writing wise, Fallout was better than New Vegas to me. Didn't play much of 2, but I plan too someday.

I always laughed in Oblivion when two NPCs with the same voice were talking to each other, hah. I mean, Bethesda RPGs are ok I guess... I think part of the problem for me is that I don't typically like the design and gameplay style of current WRPGs in general.

I haven't tried New Vegas, what did they do differently? I had always assumed it would be pretty much the exact same thing as Fallout 3.

Well for me the basic improvement was pacing, most noticeably at the start. Fallout 3 had that insanely long and boring beginning segment in that Vault, and when you got out it was just like... what do you do next? I mean I guess some people love that, but at the start of a game at least a little direction can't hurt. I remember when I found the first town and ended up getting what felt like ~20 quests at the same time, I quit.

In New Vegas it starts more abruptly (in a good way so it's probably easier to start over than Fallout 3), so you're in the game quicker and just something about it felt so much more user friendly at the beginning. It guided you a little more if you wanted it, you have some items, only a few missions so you're not overwhelmed, etc. People make suggestions of a general idea where you need to go, etc. I'm all for exploration and ended up hating having NPC's with me in this game, but yeah. It just felt way better designed than the few hours of 3 that I played. Better dialogue too. A few of my friends had the same exact experience, hated Fallout 3 and couldn't get into it, but they beat New Vegas.

I only got a few hours into Oblivion. Couldn't handle the nonstop loading on the world map, the same generically generated caves, etc. lol, for me Fallout 3 and Oblivion just simply had no "goal" or point to playing them at all from what I played.

They pretty much are the same, to me anyway. Fallout 3 has a better story, look, and soundtrack. Fallout New Vegas has less glitches, worse soundtrack, and better replay vaule. Just my opinion, but I did not see much of a difference between 3 ands NV besides little stuff like more choices to make or tiny things they added/fixed. I prefer Fallout 3 over NV because story is a big factor for me, but NV has more choices of who you are going to side with (in 3 you could only help the BoS, whereas in NV you can choose 4 different "paths" to take.) I also found it harder to fight in NV, Deathclaw/Super Mutants are definitely harder to kill. Just my two cents about Fallout.

It's mostly the same in terms of the gameplay but I found that the writing and pacing to be vastly improved. And as already pointed out the fact that you have 4 different main quest lines available is much more preferred than just helping out the Brotherhood. Personally I thought the characters and story were a lot more interesting as well though few would agree with me on that.

Maybe I should try New Vegas out then. I felt that way about Fallout 3. But unlike you, I enjoyed the hell out of Oblivion. It became a good portion of my life for like half a year.

I don't know, Fallout 3 just felt blah to me. I got outside the Vault and to Megaton City just like you, then put it down and never picked it up again.

Well despite not being a fan of Oblivion, I did enjoy what I played of it a lot more than what I played of Fallout 3. So yeah, maybe give New Vegas a shot. These games seem pretty hit or miss for a lot of people in general I guess.
