I'd like to find one person who has a console/handheld with nothing but homebrew on it who isn't an amateur developer. Unless it's balls hard to pirate games while being extremely easy to do homebrew (The only example I can think of being... actually, I can't think of a single f'ing example. If anything, it's far easier to run pirated games than homebrew software), I don't see it happening.
To be frank, the temptation to steal games is far too great for any normal man - it's especially too great for most of the man children that populate the gaming culture these days.
Not saying Sony was right for taking OtherOS away - just that Anon is not right for their methods of persuasion. It IS possible for both sides to be very, very wrong. (Of course, Anon isn't even fighting over that, they're fighting over hackers being prosecuted. As far as I'm concerned, Sony is well within their rights to prevent the PS3 from becoming a den of thieves and hackers - a consolized PSP, if you will. "OtherOS Ready" may have been one of the PS3's features, but "Able to run unauthorized code" was not.)
When it comes down to it, all I bought the PS3 for was to play Blu-Ray and video games. It's just entertainment. You can pull the whole "First they came for..." bullshit all you want, but it's nothing more than a glorified toy. Don't start getting delusions of grandeur over something that is just meant for passing entertainment.

Can we also stop personifying giant companies? Sony is a caring company.
I am happy to support Sony products. They do a lot of good in the world and are friendly to the people of the world.
They care about the quake victims:

Re: Hackers trying to take down PSN
Oy, it's hard to keep up with this thread, it's on FIRE!
Sony and Hackers have been at war for some time. Stuff like this was bound to happen until a suitable compromise can be reached (which I know is not likely).
I own a PS3 and I don't care about having Linux. However, the principle of it being taken away is a BIG issue. And by taking it away, Sony made some very intelligent and resourceful enemies. It was a stupid move on Sony's part (kind of like burning the Qur’an/Koran to piss off the Islam world).
As for screwing with the Network, I don't condone their actions, but I just think it was inevitable.
Anyway, I run CFW on my PS3 and I'm grateful for homebrewers adding additional uses to my system. I don't pirate, but have put a few of my games on the HDD to limit wear and tear on the Blu-ray.
I had to give up PSN for that, but for now, it's a fair trade. I'm even hesitant to ever install OFW again because I view it as limiting what it can do. It's like I'm lowering it's value or something.
"It only does Everything"...that Sony wants you to do.
I'll pass.
What I really don't understand is why Sony doesn't want my money. I would totally buy more stuff on their store, but they insist on locking everyone out who doesn't conform to their rules.
And who says we agree to their rules anyways? The TOS is just a bunch of legal gibberish to most gamers and is merely an extra screen between you and your game. I don't like being imposed upon. I just say, "yeah whatever, Ill do what I want with my stuff" and onto my business.
This has been slightly off topic, and I apologize. But I needed to have my say. I think it's pretty obvious that I'm rooting for the Hackers and Homebrewers when it comes right down to it.

hehe, now I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you dsheinem. To me, all multinational corporations are by default evildsheinem wrote:Can we also stop personifying giant companies? Sony is a caring company.

Besides, don't forget charity gets them free marketing and tax brakes. As we know there is nothing more valuable than marketing to these companies and tax brakes, well, are tax brakes.
Mind you it is still nice of them, but to me it's like lowering taxes before elections. It's nice, but we all know you expect something back from me, even if I don't have to give it to you.
And ajsracket, thank you. I've completed my mental image of you, so I'll just ignore you from now on.

Re: Hackers trying to take down PSN
Ok guys, a quick moment.
First, I have already warned someone about not insulting other members. I did this early on, left for two hours, and came back to this.
Let me push a quick point, if I may:
===================================================
B. Overall Community Attitude
Always display a positive, friendly attitude
Be respectful of others' opinions
Do not deliberately start arguments. Debates are great, as long as they remain respectful!
C. General Rules
No personal insults. Direct personal insult of another member, i.e., "You are an idiot." and all the variations. Why? Because this isn't grade school.
Bottom line -- don't try to tick off others.
==================================================
Now I'm not gonna name names, but folks, quit insulting each other, or I'll start passing out warnings like they were pink slips at Bizarre Creations. Understand? You can debate. That's fine. This is an interesting issue to consider for modern video games. But you WILL be respectful of each other, or I WILL shove my mod foot so far up your Internet ass that your avatar will wince. Do you understand, children?

I'm not sure my avatar would like that. In fact, I think she could take you.Ack wrote:But you WILL be respectful of each other, or I WILL shove my mod foot so far up your Internet ass that your avatar will wince.

I think this is one of the most interesting debates about modern gaming, right up there with DLC, and multiplayer taking the place of single player.
I'm with Niode -- Sony doesn't own my PS3 after I buy it, no matter how much they'd like to. It's mine, and if I want to use it to prop open a door because it's the right weight, so be it. If I want to take it apart and poke at the juicy innards, so be it. I bought it, there's no contract that says I can't poke it, prod it, prop it or flat-out pummel the silly thing.
I believe things are different when it comes to accessing the online service, but I don't have the ultimate answer there either.
