World Traveling

Post by ZeroAX »

So thinking about going to a foreign country for summer vacation, probably to Istanbul in Turkey (yeah....not going too far :P), so I was wondering, which foreign countries did you guys visit, and what were your experiences?

I've been to Germany (Berlin) and UK (London). (I've also lived in the US, but that wasn't traveling so it's a completely different topic)

I loved Germany. Berlin is so beautiful, so much history for a WW2/Cold War buff like me, the public transport is fantastic, and many people spoke English, so it was easy getting around.

I loved the palace complex in Potsdam (it's right next to Berlin so I'm not counting it as a different city visited :P), the Brandenburg gate was magnificent, and the Pergamon Museum was breath taking (yes, I went to Germany to see Greek ruins. Also the Babylon gate was really impressive and stole the show for me, too bad when they took a picture of me with the Babylonian wall art, they were shaking the camera....all 3 times).

Of course my favorite museum visited was at Checkpoint Charlie I was really amazed what people thought of to get to the other side. Of course what amazed me most, was how that guy was stupid enough to try to get his wife through the border by having her in the passenger's seat covered with a blanket. Though what really amazed me was that it worked. How dumb were the guards? Oh well, good for the couple :).

And my favorite part about my trip to Germany, German food (insert homer simpson sound of thinking about food).

What seamed strange to me, was how many places were selling parts of the Berlin wall....for ridiculous amounts of money (can't remember right, but I think it was 10€ for a rock?). No idea what was stopping people from going and breaking off a part from the wall itself :lol: Hardly a work of art, that humanity is going to miss.

I fell in love with Berlin. I'd move there, if I could stand the German language :lol: . Saying Ich liebe dich to women just doesn't sound "cute" :lol:

I'll later add my experiences in London :).

So, where have you traveled abroad, and how was it?

I've been to Stratford Canada a few summers to see Shakespeare. Honestly it was basically the same thing as America, except every label is half english and half french.

I've been to New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec in Canada.

Quebec is kinda cool to look around and some of the people know English.

Ontario has a lot of stuff as long as you stay near the U.S. borders.

NB is kinda boring, but it has hella cheap ice cream.

Canada in a nutshell: kinda cool if you know where to look.

Is there anything to see there?

Also, isn't Okinawa just a part of Japan? Does it have something extra special which made you mention it?

Also, you traveled all over eastern Asia I see :) Any fun anecdotes?

Been to Los Angeles, London, Paris, Tokyo, Yamanashi (Mt. Fuji)...each time to see Morning Musume, or at least related to that (yes, it's an obsession, I know...).

Los Angeles and Paris were for conventions (Anime Expo and Japan Expo, respectively) so I spent more time at the convention centers and/or in lines for events and autograph sessions than actually seeing anything...especially in Paris. So, sadly, I have almost nothing to say about places in Paris other than Charles de Gaulle airport and the Paris-Nord Villepinte exhibition center (both of which were about as exciting as you'd expect)...I did see the Arc de Triomphe one night (which was REALLY impressive, the thing is so much bigger than you'd ever expect), but that's only because my friends and I were lined up for an autograph session happening the next day at a store within walking distance of it.
Los Angeles was the first time I had seen the group, so I wasn't quite as enthusiastic or prepared for the Morning Musume-related events and did do a little bit of sight-seeing but not much. More than anything I was impressed by the cleanliness and weather in LA (the area in downtown near the convention center is really, really nice)...I'm not exaggerating when I say that was the best weather I've ever experienced in my entire life.

London was part of the Paris trip (flew into Heathrow, hung out in London for a day, took a bus to Paris for the con and then a bus back for one more day in London before flying back to the US). The only real sightseeing I did in London was in Little Tokyo for a day (which was fun, nothing terribly interesting or exciting though). Other than that I just hung out with friends.

Lots of people get on my case for not doing more 'substantial' things when I go to these places, but the trips have always been focused on seeing Morning Musume and so I rarely have time for sightseeing...plus, I'm not really the sightseeing type. If an opportunity falls in my lap I'll take it (like the Arc de Triomphe), but I wouldn't go out of my way. These trips are enjoyable for me, and that's all that really matters :mrgreen:

Now, the trip to Tokyo was two weeks of mostly free time, so I did do some sightseeing...still almost all related to Morning Musume though :lol: (places they did location shoots for DVDs and TV shows, etc...or in the case of Yamanashi for a fan club tour of theirs).
Pictures here if anybody is curious (and feel free to add me on fb if you want~):

Planning another trip back to Japan later on this year since my favorite member of Morning Musume is leaving at the end of September...hopefully staying all of August and all of September. Will definitely do some standard sightseeing on that trip, will have to fill all that time between Morning Musume events somehow :P

I did a really short port call in Vladivostok, a Russian port not terribly far from the Chinese border on the coast. It was February. There's your anecdote.

So. Frigging. Cold.

Okinawa is part of Japan but only if you look on a map. In terms of climate, geography, topography, and the people it's a completely different world. I'd never mistake Naha for Yokohama, if you get my meaning.

@CatchFiveBats

What the fuck is Momusu?

@Flake

:lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Well, I once did ask a Scottish tourist if he's from England, so I can imagine what it's like. Still haven't asked a Canadian if he's American though :lol:

Ah, sorry...abbreviation for Morning Musume. Reflex to type that instead of the full name, my bad.

The countries I been to are the USA, Germany, Turkey, and Greece. Pretty similar to the places the OP has been to, lol.
