I haven't ranted about my computer for a while

Post by Erik_Twice »

Guess what, my computer is at it again and it shuts itself down if I dare to make it work a little, be it launch TF2, play Stepmania or watch Youtube videos.

The fans look clean but they may be the culprit as I closed the box and the shut downs were much faster, with the computer getting very hot.

I was getting unusually poor performance these days, like only 20 FPS on TF2 when it should hit the cap all the time.

Any ideas?

Ah, and I have another problem. You see, I used to run three screens and I'm only running one now. But some programs still open as if they were on the other screens! Since the cursor can't get there I can't move the programs to the screen.

So, any tips for that?

Anyone else think that this is a Power Supply issue?

it seems like it. i would definitely test the power supply first.

Your PC may be shutting down early due to overheating. Try opening the tower case, and aiming a desk fan towards it. See if that lets you use it longer.

As for your problem with programs opening off screen, I think it's because your PC is still set to operate in 3 screen mode. Change your settings back to 1 screen, and it should fix it.

Check your ram, make sure it's seated tightly. Make sure the cpu isn't getting to hot on both the motherboard and the video card. And as mentioned above, it could be the power supply.

Definitely definitely definitely check the power supply, once they start heating up like that you're in danger of them damaging the rest of the parts in your machine. I've experienced this first hand.

This is definitely a power supply problem. You have recently just upgraded to a 5770 am I right? What wattage is your power supply? What might have ran fine before may struggle with a 5770, it's a pretty beefy GPU and it likes to gulp the juice. Overheating is a side effect of a PSU working too hard. Feel the temperature of the PSU next time it does it, I can guarantee that it will be roasting hot. Wattage ratings aren't the upper limit of what a powersupply can do. It can do more than that, it will just over heat. The wattage rating is what the PSU can comfortably supply without over working it's components. Even then you don't want to really push the upper limit as most PSUs are most efficient around the 75-80% capacity mark.

Guess what? I opened my PC and cleaned it from top to bottom, even removing the CPU's heatsink and putting on new thermical paste and now all the problems dissapeared.

You may think it was really dirty but, alas, it wasn't. The GPU had a couple of bits here and there and the CPU was only dirty, nothing that blocked airflow too much at first glance.

So yeah, clean your computers!

Thanks a lot everyone.

PD: My PSU has 630W, more than enough for my system, I ran the calcs some time ago =P

Just out of interest. How old is the whole thing? As in your oldest component, not an average. How old is the PSU in particular and is it a branded PSU or just one that came with your PC/Case?
