Thoughts on the Game(s)

I really didn't like Perfect Dark at all, back in the day I never got into it, but after finishing Goldeneye 007 last year I thought I owe it to myself to give it another go. While the graphics (even though on High Res the frame rate takes a massive hit) are good for the console and the inclusion of voice acting is amazing for a N64 game, it cant take away from the fact it is just boring and frustrating.

Nothing is worse than getting to the end of a level, failing an objective and having to do the whole thing all over again. Elvis may be the most retarded character I have ever seen in a video game, every time he spoke I wanted to turn my 64 off, a generic looking alien in a stars and stripes vest, what the hell?

TOTAL: 13

I figured it was time for a monthly update. I only really managed to complete two games last month. Obviously, they were both pretty long ones so I am quite happy with that. Pokemon White took me about 17 hours to reach the ending credit and yet there is still so much to see and do. Okamiden took me a little longer at almost 20 hours. Initially, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to play so for about the first week of March, I messing around with Dark Forces. Unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to complete that game and only reached level 5.

Anyways, some impressions of Pokemon and Okamiden.

Pokemon White:

I will start by saying that I have not played a Pokemon game since Pokemon Red. Obviously, this was a very refreshing experience for me since it's not like I have been keeping up with the series and playing each version that has been released. Anyways, I absolutely LOVED this game! Pokemon was just genuinely fun and especially refined. Now, being 25 years old, I can see what makes Pokemon so much fun and great. I never was that fascinated with the series when I played Pokemon Red as a teenager. As such, I have a new addiction and gaming series that I enjoy. :)

Now, this experience was so enjoyable, I actually purchased Pokemon Black from Amazon (on sale for $25) and I plan on experiencing it all over again. I'm actually excited to see the differences between both games. Most importantly, I'm actually excited to play through it again!

Okamiden:

I didn't let my new release momentum stop and so I used my $10 credit from Pokemon White and applied it to Okamiden. I must say that I've been having such a blast playing my DS the past month. Okamiden is truly a technical marvel on the DS. I think that many years down the road, we will look at Okamiden as one of the games that pushed the DS to the limit. However, enough about that, Okamiden was another game that was just an absolute blast to play. Chibiterasu and his cast are all absolutely adorable and loveable. The characters have so much charm that you can't help but become engrossed into the story. Anyways, I think if you have played Okami, you will really enjoy Okamiden. However, if you haven't played Okami, then Okamiden will really surprise you. Now, I have played both DS Zelda games and I believe that the Okamiden experience is a lot better. I think any DS owner should really support this wonderful title and pick it up! I would love to see more of the Okami series.

1. Lego Indiana Jones 2 (360) - 1000/1000
2. Star Wars The Force Unleashed II (360) - 1200/1200
3. Afterburner Climax (XBLA) - 200/200
4. Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing (360) - 1000/1000
5. Bully Scholarship Edition (360) - 1000/1000
6. Conan (360) - 1000/1000
7. Aegis Wing (XBLA) - 200/200
8. Harm's Way (XBLA) - 200/200
9. Lego Batman (360) - 1000/1000
10. Galaga (XBLA) - 200/200
11. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (XBLA) - 200/200
12. Duke Nukem - Manhattan Project (XBLA) - 200/200

I actually own Manhattan Project on PC as well, but played it through for the first time on XBLA because I had picked it up during one of their many online sales with some extra points I had sitting around. Manhattan Project is a pretty simple game that shows its age with some very blocky looking characters and clumsy animations (like Duke's slide move). It is a pretty average run and gun platformer, unfortunately not nearly up to the level of Contra or Turrican. If you've played the original Duke Nukem games on PC (pre DN3D) then you'll see that this game is a homage to Duke's 2d origins. In fact, at the very beginning of the game you will see graffiti of Duke's original 2D sprite on the wall of the building he bursts out of.

The signature Duke pipebombs, desert eagle, shotgun and mighty boot make a return along with new weapons like the GLOPP gun and pipebomb launcher. Duke's trakemark one liners and crude humor are there too, although it's more funny than sexy when one of the babes you have to rescue gyrates her blocky body and shakes her triangular breasts at you to show her appreciation. In the game you're fighting someone named Mech Morphix, although no real motivation for the obvious animosity that Duke and Morphix have for each other is ever really given. I guess all someone really needs to do is piss Duke off before he'll go after them, but Morphix acts like they have a history that is never actually detailed. In such a short and simple game though, this inconsistency is little more than a minor annoyance/amusement.

1. 3/26 - Crash Bandicoot: Warped! (PS1)
2. 3/26 - Shatter (PS3)
3. 3/27 - Megaman X (SNES)
4. 3/31 - Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
5. 4/05 - Klonoa (Wii)

I wish I had given this game a chance back on the PS1. I remember playing the demo back when it came out and thinking "meh". I don't know what my problem was because I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the Wii-make. The game is really a lot of fun from start to finish. The game is easy over all and has a nice difficulty ramp up with some more challenging platforming and puzzle bits towards the end. The boss battles are creative and fun, if maybe on the easy side. One thing that made me happy is that the game supports game cube controllers, so I used my 4 system retro controller adapter and a SNES controller. This made controlling the game fantastic.

What I liked most about the game was the experience. The atmosphere is great. Cartoony and colorful with a dream-like magical feel. I personally really liked the music, it suits the game very well in my opinion. The Wii-make's graphics are cleaner, brighter and more vibrant than the original, overall a nice looking Wii game. The graphics won't blow you away, but they do a nice job and there are a lot of fun and pretty designs. If you like platformers and never gave Klonoa a try, definitely pick this one up.
A-B-P. A-always, B-be, P-platforming. Always be platforming! Always be platforming!!

4/1: Pokémon White Version Nintendo DS
4/7: Elite Beat Agents Nintendo DS NEW

Total: 21

Okay, before I go into anything more, let me say that Elite Beat Agents is now my favorite DS game. Not any of the Pokémon games (yes, it's blasphemy, shut up), Scribblenauts, or Mario Kart DS. It's Elite Beat Agents.

Basically, this is the perfect game whether you want to pick-up-and-play or you want a long session of gaming. The songs are short, and the difficulty works really well. The easy mode isn't ridiculously easy like other rhythm/music games, but it's not overly difficult. The curve seems to be much less steep from song to song as other rhythm/music games.

Now, the music. It's spectacular. For having all the songs be covers, they did a really good job. The songs that I don't like (the newer pop songs) are made a bit better by the cover, and the covers do a good job of staying true to the songs I do like ('70s/'80s). Also, how the heck did they fit all these songs and sound bites onto this little card?

I don't even get too frustrated if I fail. It's a mind game, and you just need to remember where everything is if you don't see it the first time. There's also the replay mode to see where you went wrong.

I actually beat the easy mode on Tuesday right after I got it, but I decided to wait until I beat normal difficulty before I posted it as beat.

Anyway, back to playing!

EBA is def. my favorite DS game as well, and one of my "perfect 10" games. if only they would put out a sequel ... (i've played the original ouendan, but not ouendan 2 yet.)

Real men play on hard mode :p

I love that game too, I found it so replayable, despite the small(ish) soundtrack. One of my favourite games on DS.

It's not quite the same thing (in fact, its not really the same thing at all), but if you enjoyed EBA, I have a feeling you'd like Rhythm Paradise/Heaven aswell. Its dirt cheap, and loads of fun. Warioware meets the rhythm genre.
