GBC Turns Self Off (Pictures Included)

Post by emwearz »

So I got a GBC on eBay quite a long time ago and it arrived damaged as well and would'nt work, the time I ordered it online I also ordered a replacement housing, both have been sitting under my stairs since.

Well the GBC never worked but I had not had a look under the hood until today, it looks like some of the PCB has been damaged and someone just dropped some solder on it hoping to fix it. Outside of this, everything looks fairly normal.

It turns on for 2 seconds or so, shows the Gameboy screen then turns off and the screen fades away. I am hoping i can re-route something and get it working.

Any ideas?

try changing all of the electrolytic capacitors (theres only a few in the GBC) i had a GBC that would not turn on at all and replacing the caps fixed it.

So you don't think it has anything to do with the peeled of pcb and blob of solder that has been placed on it?

Yes and no. But probably no.

I think the previous owner had "troubleshot" the gbc down to what they thought the problem was. Obviously it didn't fix it.

I'll go with Hobie and the capacitors. I don't have any experience with GBC's, but i've fixed quite a few Game Gear with similar problems and replacing the capacitors fixed 90% of the problems.

If you have a voltmeter you could try and locate where power is lost on the board. From the pics it looks like a battery has leaked on it and might've corroded some joints. I'd try to re-solder that batter terminal also.
