Sorry if this has been addressed before; I tried a forum search and it wasn't responding).
What I want to know is if anyone has had any luck with 3rd party N64 controllers (preferably a type whose analog doesn't wear as fast as the official ones).
I just bought a cheapee "Retro-Bit" brand controller and, while the analog stick is more modern and durable (the reason I bought it), it suffers a big loss in control sensitivity compared to an official one (mostly with diagonal movements). I'm just not all that happy with it.
Here's the type I just bought:

Tomee makes an identical one, so that brand is out too.
and then there's a brand that looks like an original and names it simply Classic Controller:
http://cgi.ebay.com/BLACK-Classic-Contr ... 588d42354d
but it probably has the same wearing issues as an official controller.
This one looked awesome and I might have jumped on it if I could justify the price (and I think the $40 selling price was well under the normal going price, especially for a gold one):

In any case, this one's not very common and is no longer made $$$.
Back to my question,
Has anyone found an affordable brand that is both durable and responsive?
I'd love to hear anybody's thoughts on the matter.

The gold standard for replacement N64 controllers is the Hori mini-pad. The other option is to apply some sort of joystick grease to the N64 controller to extend the life. I think it has been discussed before in these forums. Take a look through these posts:nightrnr wrote: This one looked awesome and I might have jumped on it if I could justify the price (and I think the $40 selling price was well under the normal going price, especially for a gold one):

Hmm, I do have a couple replacement sticks that I'm afraid to use. Greasing them would be a good idea.
However, I've heard that you need to re-lube them every month or so (which is way to much maintenance for me). Is there any truth to that? I often change systems I'm playing and it can be months before I come back to it. Taking the controller apart to grease it every time would be out of the question.
I realize that it couldn't hurt though and that some grease is better than none. So I'll get to it at least once.
I really wish nintendo offered more modern replacement analogs though, just a more durable part to replace the stick. I'd buy, since I love the original controller design.

The N64 controllers I use are Superpad64, but I've had them for awhile and don't know where you could find them. They are nice though, I've had them for a few years (got them used) and they haven't caused me any problems. Also, they don't have the two side things to hold on to, just the middle one.

I've heard the Tomee controller is pretty good. It has a metal analog stick (similar to the old interact superpad). I haven't tried it myself, but it looks like a good replacement, plus it has a real d-pad.

hi . i thought i would offer some hard learned advice. 1. do not lube anything...the petroleum dissolves plastic or makes it soft ....the best thing is super cleaning it. 2. if you go ahead and open up the thumb stick assembly you can see where to clean it . if the issue is not moving in one direction then the chances are one of the little wheels is off ever so slightly . you can fix this by lifting up on the plastic holding it in and reseating it. if the problem is moving on its own ....well.....ok here is the secret....go buy the most expensive high gloss metallic nail polish and use it to build up the black plastic parts that are worn down. then it has to harden for at least twenty four hours before you put it all back together. . this is all tried and true by a mom who could not afford to replace and was forced to repair repair repair

The minipad is great for everything but shooters. It has a high learning curve to play fps's with it.
The best suggestion is to replace the joystick with a replacement one - either a old style or new style. It is not terribly expensive and only takes about twenty minutes a controller.
