BTW, this actually answers the initial question -- something that had escaped me. nightrnr is totally correct, all of the black (backwards compatible) GBC carts have DMG numbers, while the clear (GBC-only) carts have different numbers. SO if you look at a list of GB carts along with their numbers (for instance, the NintendoAge list when the database goes back up) you can easily just go down the list and identify which cart-type it is by seeing if the number starts with DMG or not.nightrnr wrote:
Oh, and all the Black label games I have still show a "DMG" number on the carts.

Re: Game Boy Color Exclusives?
Just thought of something else.
Pokemon yellow does indeed use the 4-color scheme on the field/town screens (just like on a SGB). But it also changes that color scheme based on your location in the game. It's like the GBC treats Pokemon Yellow like a SGB game.
Only thing is, I don't know of any other GB game that does that on the GBC (changes color schemes)...
You also can't change the color scheme from start-up like you should be able to with standard Game Boy games on GBC (and that stands true for SGB compatible games too, you can change the color scheme with those... for ex. Up + A at start-up).
It's also probably the only GB game that actually mentions GBC compatibility on the back of the box (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone). It even states "Displays 4-10 colors".

It's just unique from what I can gather. And I can't in good conscience classify it with the other GB and even SGB games. It's just operates too different for me. I think it's the one game that bridges GB and GBC formats.
...more food for thought and curiosity...
--Edit-- I should clarify. I absolutely agree that it belongs on the standard GB list, I just think it "can" go on a GBC list, depending on the viewpoint (obviously I have a different, possibly skewed, one and I acknowlege that).

Re: Game Boy Color Exclusives?
I THINK because it's the last GB game released, and the GBC was already out.nightrnr wrote:

Game Boy Color 11/23/1998
Pokemon Yellow 10/1/1999
remember, Yellow was basically built off the already existing Red/Blue, so it made sense that they just release it as a GB cart rather than GBC. That being said, it was the only GB game released in 1999, almost a full year after the GBC hardware was out. So that would give reason as to why a GB package would mention the GBC.
Re: Game Boy Color Exclusives?
Yes, and some of the later GBC games showed compatibility with the Gameboy Advance (like on the Dragon Warrior III and Harry Potter game boxes). Probably to reduce confusion and ease the transition.
Is there a difference though?
Pokemon Yellow advertised an extra feature (I'm referring to the 4-10 colors blurb).
I guess it's a feature that was already established with the SBG enhanced games, but this was the only one of those to bring something like that to the GBC.
Anyways, to me, the extra colors in the Pokemon battles just added so much more flavor to the Yellow version than the Red/Blue versions. That's partly why I protest the difference so much.
...and I'll shut up any time BTW, I may have derailed this topic a bit
I think I've made all the points that I wanted to.
I do really enjoy these type of discussions though. It's the type of interesting topics that really drew me to these forums (I've lurked a lot longer than my join date would suggest).

Re: Game Boy Color Exclusives?
alright well I've got the means to put this list together for you now. It's just gonna take me a little while to type it all out Racket. But I've got all the info right here.racketboy wrote:Is there a list somewhere of all the GBC games that can't be played on a standard Game Boy?
Re: Game Boy Color Exclusives?
True 'dat.I will say this much -- Yellow is so much better than Red & Blue.
Also, Pokemon Yellow wasn't enhanced at all for the Japan release.
We all got lucky in that respect. Of course, I don't know how many people would have justified the purchase if it wasn't.

Pokemon Yellow came out after the GBC was already out, the SGB-style coloring going on was basically Nintendo's way of quickly making it GBC compatible at the last minute.
I remember reading about it in nintendo power.
