I can't answer yr question definitively, but I can confirm that I have a wired Xbox 360 controller that works fine on my PC. I don't remember what the packaging said or what the official name of my controller is...

I have a Gamestop brand Xbox 360 controller and I can vouch that it does work on PC.

That's not what he is asking, swift. Yes a 'PC' Microsoft 360 controller will work on the 360 since it's just a normal wired 360 controller, it just comes with a driver disc. Wired 360 controllers work on the PC as well.

Is the driver disc actually needed?

For XP, yes it was needed for those without interwebnt connections. Nowadays, the controllers are pretty much plug and play.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

If you get a receiver the wireless ones will work on PC as well. I've only seen knockoff receivers these days, but mine works ok. Though it was annoying until I had one controller synced to my PC and one synced to my 360 with having to resync and hot have it turn on my 360.
