Is this Doomed or still fixable at a reasonable price

Post by AznKhmerBoi »

Found a Fatboy - PS3 (BAD CD DRIVE) - $100

:?: PS3 Fatboy 60gb

CD Drive has a Logic board on it, and it seems that is the issue with the system.

This system does boot up, play music, goes on the internet, wireless and wired both work, HDMI and Composite also both work, No other issue or defect other then the CD drive not taking/reading discs.

Did try the actaul drive out on another logic board, and the drives motor and lens is good.

Shouldn't this be moved to technical help?

What firmware is it running? Also, don't update it, if it's a hackable firmware you may never even need to use your disc drive. Also, if it's hackable you can marry any PS3 BDROM drive to it from another toasted machine.

No it's not doomed. If you find out the firmware (system, about) then you might be able to install CFW and be able to boot games from the HDD. Bypassing the need for a disc drive altogether. Not only that but you can now marry other logic boards to the system so that it will still work. All you need to find is a PS3 BDROM drive that has a faulty laser/assembly but a working logic board and just marry the two. Easy.

necro-tastic!!

Ok so I pretty much have the same problem with my 40 gig playstation 3 not reading discs but after some googling I came across a "fix." The fix only lasts about 15 minutes so I still have the problem and hence the quotes.
The "fix" is going into safe mode and choosing the third option restore system files. After that it will play a disc like normal for about 15 to 20 minutes at most then my game will just freeze. When I restart the blue light showing that a disc is in the drive is on but the game doesn't show up on the xmb.
I am wondering if anyone has any clue or suggestions. If I can't get it fixed I'm thinking about just trading it in at gamestop and getting a slim or if I have the money keeping it and buying a slim.
