Whats the weirdest medical condition that you've been in?

Post by avrame »

Hey all, as the topic states, just wondering if anyone has ever come down with an uncommon illness or condition in the past, and wouldn't mind sharing :P

Two days ago, I was diagnosed with diplopia, which is also known as double vision. No one I personally know has ever come down with it, and according to my doctor, she's only seen 3 cases of it in 20 some years. Woohoo :P

The condition can be best described as my eyes are not cooperating with one another. The worst I've seen so far is my left eye is staring straight, and my right eye is staring to the bottom right. It's thrown off my sense of balence, and the doctor gave me an eyepatch to help the motion sickness for the time being.

That said, anyone have anything they'd like to share? :P

Had henoch schonlein purpura as a kid to the point that doctors were considering the amputation of my legs. Luckily medicine has come a long way and it looks like it's not that much of an issue anymore.

On the stranger side of things, when I was in college a few years ago I came down with a bad case of Pertussis - AKA: Whooping Cough!

It was such a bad case they actually ordered me to stay away from campus buildings for 30 days to prevent a campus-wide outbreak. They made my roommates come into the college's Health Center for a check-up to make sure they didn't contract it, and even sent out an anonymous flier to Student Centers announcing about "an instance of pertussis, or whooping cough, present on campus" and that anybody with the listed symptoms were asked to report to a Health Center immediately.

I was the most popular anonymous person on campus that month..

I would sometimes feel some fatigue or slight drowsiness even when just walking for short distances.
After been to see numerous specialists I was finally diagnosed with a type of Thalassemia Minor.
What it is it's a type of genetic trait which sometimes causes mild anemia.
Turns out in my specific case it's not a serious condition, but for the time it went undiagnosed it sure played on my mind not knowing what was making me feel listless and weak.

I have a Talon cusp; it is one of the rarest tooth deformities. However, it is no way noticeable.

Yep, that's the scariest part of the issue. According to the doctor I saw, the issue is mainly due to swelling in my pertuitary gland, which sits right above the nerves that control eye functions. According to her, it could also explain why I had poor night vision for the past 5 years, and also why I see ghosting effect from bright LEDs.

Sometimes I get sleep paralysis -

(the wiki entry gives a very broad description of all the types, I've only had the paralysis upon waking up - none of the super crazy stuff they mention)

Not quite sure if it counts, but until I figured out what it was it scared the crap out of me. Definitely the strangest thing I've ever experienced

I have dellens, which are essentially bumps on the eye. I have to rub baby shampoo in my eyes every morning, else I will be miserable from the pain all day.

I also had kidney stones near the end of January, but those are gone now. Maybe they aren't weird, but they are for a teenager. :|

Yeeeeaaaaah. That's kinda... not good. Kidney stones are something you shouldn't be getting for at least another 45 years.

I hope you don't have any more.
