Some HD sets are cheaper than the HD consoles, but buying a TV plus a console is a major investment.
I don't have an HD TV, all TVs in my House are at least 7 years old. There's little benefit in HD for most people, really.
Donkey Kong Country, great or awful?
Re: Donkey Kong Country, great or awful?
I completely agree with you honestly. I played tons and tons of N64 games growing up and can still go back to pretty much all of them. Personally, DK64 was just an extremely weird case for me. Marathoning the game when I had a high fever probably doesn't help my jaded memories of it.AppleQueso wrote:What were you guys using a messed up coax cable or something? "unreadable" text? Wtf?
I still think the n64 has at LEAST 30-40 or so great games if you're willing to really dig for them. Enough to justify the purchase for me. So many people loathe the n64 compared to the psx or saturn, I really never understood it much. Guess I preferred 'blurry' to 'jagged and pixelated'. Of course I like all 3 systems a bunch but hey.
It's kind of like how I'm playing Ultima Underworld now and loving it, I can play hours of Doom or Duke Nukem 3D and other old shooters like that, but Marathon on the other hand... the environments are so claustrophobic and small, and your viewing position makes everything look too "tall"... it's weird but that game makes me pretty dizzy and I can't really play it.
Out of hundreds of games I've played those are honestly like the only two examples I can think of that give me motion sickness. Pretty weird.

Na Original DKC remake anyday over DK64 that game was okay when you first start playing it but since I bought it as a fan of Donkey Kong after playing DKC 1 2 and 3 DK64 was a let down.swiftzx wrote:Hatta wrote:They are decent games, but overhyped. DK64 on the other hand. Now THAT's a turd.
No, I would have preferred a remake of DK64 than DKC any day.
I disliked that you couldn't jump on the enemies and also the game was a super mega collect-a-thon and while some people can stand it even like it, for me it quickly got on my nerves I gave up half way after having to collect so many things and went back to playing it on the Snes where I actually liked the gameplay.
With regards to the topic I started off not liking it as when I borrowed it all the levels were opened up to me and I just saw it as a generic platformer but then I accidently wiped the file and had to finish the game for him and I quickly saw being a well made platformer was one of Donkey Kong Countries biggest strengths coupled with the graphics at the time made it an audio visual treat.
It actually stole play time from my back then new Playstation and Sega Saturn.
I would definitely say its one of those games that if you got a Snes having not had one before due to buying a Sega console or other computer Donkey Kong Country is one of those games you should play from start to finish as it is one of the finer examples of platforming on the console and should be played even if you have played Mario World since it does have a few of it's own twists like the barrels.

oh, also
DK64 isn't one of my favorites, but I've played far, FAR worse games in my time.

I actually checked my save file on there yesterday. 101% completion, 115 hours of play.
Eh, more than I'd get out of most RPGs.

Yeah that game was hilariously huge.
Banjo-Tooie had tons too it as well.

That's easy. I bought the console thinking I'd have enough money coming in to buy the TV a little later.irixith wrote:I'm of two minds here -- if you can afford a 360 or PS3, chances are you can afford an HDTV, many of which are cheaper than the consoles themselves. I mean really, why would you be buying an HD console for use on an SD TV? It doesn't make a lot of logical sense.
And then I lost my job. Turns out the economy sucks, so some of us lost our sources of income.
Re: Donkey Kong Country, great or awful?
As long as it bolsters their profit margins.irixith wrote: Frankly, SD is dead -- we know it simply in terms of the hardware we can buy. It's all LCD monitors and LCD televisions. How long realistically are game developers required to support legacy formats?
Pesonally, I look at the expense of upgrading TV's as a good thing. That is a barrier to entry that software developers have no way of affecting - and that barrier is what keeps them from running roughshod over us, forcing consumers to replace their TV's sooner than they would of their own accord.
Besides, I remember when I was a kid in the 80's that B&W TVs were still pretty damn common place despite color TV's having been around for decades. And that is a WAY bigger difference to the average consumer than HD resolution is.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
