If you've downloaded entire sets to emulate (as many do), you run into "pirate's syndrome", where you have too much available to you for free, and have no idea where to begin, or even how to enjoy it.

Money, as much I hate it, becomes the great equalizer -- if you have to fork over money for a game, you're more likely to give it time and attention, as you had to trade something of your own for it, and therefore it intrinsically has more value than that which you got for nothing.

Solution: Unless you're some sort of rom collector/archivist, delete everything that you downloaded, and start again by only downloading a few games you'd like to play. Your brain will thank you. :)

I find it works well to keep the archive and the things I'm interested in at the moment seperate. I can keep a fullset on a separate partition and never think of it, and have 2 or 3 games unzipped in my home directory and not get overwhelmed.

I've found emulation to be a nice convenience since Genecyst was first released back in 1997. Downloading whole romsets is not my style though.

This. If I have to pay cash monies for a game I am WAY more likely to play it. The only time emulation was a viable choice for me was back in my Navy days when I had no other way to play SNES or NES games on deployment.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

The other thing I noticed when I used to emulate was that if a game didn't hold my interest at the maximum, I would just move on and try another one. This lead me to half-start a number of games and then eventually just quit playing altogether.

Word. Romsets are truly the devil. I'm a pack rat on my computer (I guess if you could say that), but I just never go for those sets since they're so overwhelming you don't even know where to start. It's been like that for 10+ years for me since I've been emulating stuff, so I just make sure to seek out games one by one very specifically so I know I'll get around to them.

I'm not for console emulation, however I definitely feel MAME has its place!

True, there are so many interesting fighters that never got console releases.

MAME is even more wonderful if you can pair it with your favourite arcade stick, and even a dedicated machine. It's just not feasible to fill a room with arcade cabinets for most people, but a small machine with so many amazing arcade games that you can't experience any other way..
