Donkey Kong Country, great or awful?

Haha, now the guys from the same podcast are complaining about things in Super Metroid and A Link to the Past. Me thinks these guys are SNES haters.

How can you not be a SNES hater when you had this:

I love all three- wait... four Donkey Kong Country games!
The second is undoubtedly the best, but I have a soft spot for the third and how different its environments were.
I definitely hold them in higher regard than any 2D Mario games. It's not a crime to like nice graphics and audio - and the gameplay was still top notch anyway.

I too found the Donkey Kong Country games to be of exceptional quality. It's interesting to see that the general consensus is that 2 is the best, and I must also agree on that. The platforming is great, the graphics don't even look on the level of 16-bit, and the overall atmosphere to these games really draws me in time after time. There's definitely the nostalgia factor for me, no purpose in denying that, but I'd imagine most could get into DKC based on its merit alone.

I value gameplay over everything, but the graphics and sounds of the DKC series are so beautiful they make the games great. I can understand some people criticizing the gameplay as generic (esp. compared to the 8 and 16 bit Mario games), but there is nothing wrong with it other than not being very innovative.

I sadly don't have good memories of DK64 on the other hand. I remember marathoning that game (and people who have played it can probably back me up in saying it's like the BIGGEST 3D adventure game ever)... but I played it constantly for a week or so when I had a high fever and was really sick. Something about Rare's platformers on the 64, even Banjo at times, made me very motion sick, like the stages were often so claustrophobic or something, most other platformers back then didn't bother me like these games. Basically when I think about DK64, just thinking about it thesedays makes me a little nauseous. It's weird, can't even explain it, and there's no other game out there I've ever played that gives me such a feeling... but yeah. Weirdest experience ever.

Every 3D N64 game I ever played gave me motion sickness. That console was a complete waste of money for me.

I recently listened to a retro podcast about Donkey Kong Country. Three of the five podcasters *hated* the game and tore it apart. I was kind of surprised. This is the second time recently that I've heard of people hating the game with a passion. They at least acknowledged the new Wii game as being great. I personally had a great time with the first and second Donkey Kong Country games and beat them both.

What about folks here? Do you have fond or angry memories of this game?

5 "hated" DKC??? Well, 5 have no taste in platformers if they think it's not a well made game. You can not like a genre if it's not your taste but to say it's not a well-made game is just...
