Donkey Kong Country, great or awful?

NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii

What is your opinion of the original Donkey Kong Country?

I thought it was awesome, a good entertaining platformer.

Donkey Kong Country, great or awful?

Post by kelsoanim »

I recently listened to a retro podcast about Donkey Kong Country. Three of the five podcasters *hated* the game and tore it apart. I was kind of surprised. This is the second time recently that I've heard of people hating the game with a passion. They at least acknowledged the new Wii game as being great. I personally had a great time with the first and second Donkey Kong Country games and beat them both.

What about folks here? Do you have fond or angry memories of this game?

The first two are awesome games, and I play through them every so often when I need a reminder of how great straight platformers can be. The third is a bit of a turd, although enjoyable if you stick with it. The new (remake? sequel? reboot?) is one of the greatest Wii games there is -- but it's no Donkey Kong Country.

I don't care much for platformers, and there are some level designs in the first that I don't particularly care for. DKC 2 was really the pinnacle for me though, and I'll openly admit it's a stellar series overall.

Compared to some of the truly bland, uninspired platformers on the SNES, DKC is a gem.

DKC is my least favourite of the DKC trilogy, but I still love it.

I loved the first one and have played through it a few times. This is one of the few games that I actually suffer from nostalgia for. I rented the third one when I was a kid and remember liking it a bit. I haven't played the second one or the reboot.

I think the only reason why people rip on it is because there's a quote about Miyamoto hating Donkey Kong Country.

They are decent games, but overhyped. Critics often give negative marks to perfectly serviceable games because they don't live up to their hype. They're certainly technically excellent, with maybe some bland level design.

DK64 on the other hand. Now THAT's a turd.

No, I would have preferred a remake of DK64 than DKC any day.

That's probably true about a lot of people. The Cult of Miyamoto.

The way talked about DKC back then still pisses me off honestly. Granted, he took it back, but to this day it reminds me of people who take everything he says or does as law. Fuck that. The man was great in his time, but that doesn't make him infallible. He is not the be all end all of game design.
