Need me some wireless Dreamcast and Saturn controllers

Post by Genesis Knight »

Aside from pricey 'back in the day' IR pads, was there ever a suitable method found to get wireless controllers on the Dreamcast or Saturn? The PS2->DC adapters don't work with the Logitech PS2 wireless controller (the best one), and I'm not sure I've heard of any adapters to get modern controllers working on the Saturn.

After picking up the Logitech PS2 and oXbox controllers, it's hard to go back to the old ways.

that's your best bet. there are a lot of links so that's why i linked the google page. some have done amazing mod work but as far as looking super great, there's not a lot out there.

i WISH someone would make some RF saturn pads and sell them to me, but i am not holding my breath.

Hope I can be of some help here. The original post has been removed, but there is a ton of great info there that should help you on your quest for wireless DC controllers.

So for the record I saw on another forum that the Dragoncast Super Converter would work with the (super awesome) Logitech Cordless Action controller for the PS2. I can confirm today that is sort-of true. The problem is that you can't have the VMU and the wireless controller at the same time.

I have the official white japanese IR pad for saturn. It's really comfortable and cool looking but sometimes it does weird things like pause when I didn't press start, B button randomly becomes like a turbo button...I think the problem may be my controller ports because similar problems have occurred when I play fighting games with friends, but only on the player 2 controller. Saturn Junkyard reviewed the european version and didn't mention any of these things. There's no difference between the european and japanese versions besides the color, right?

here's his review:

and a japanese wireless pad for a decent price if you can find a receiver:

edit: just reread your post and realized you're not into the IR pads at all, making my post useless

I had a pair of unofficial but great wireless pads for Saturn a couple years ago. They just decided to stop working one day though. Such a shame, because, while not quite as good as the official Sega pads in comfort and quality, they never cut out or had any problems like that. They had a great range of rotational movement, so you didn't have to point them right at the console, and, the battery life was fantastic as well.

I'd love to find some official Japanese ones and paint them black to match the USA Saturn. They're so hard to find :(.

Well, at least controller extensions are easy to find. I have 2 6ft extensions I bought for a dollar each and, while not as good as wireless, works well enough.

I can understand not really wanting IR wireless pads, but that's pretty much your only option. Many different wireless option, for controllers, didn't really evolve until the early 2000's, before that IR was the only option. Also, realistically, when wouldn't you be pointing the controller towards the system. IR also gets some mad long battery life compared to Bluetooth. You could mod your controllers, but that would be one crazy mod, extremely complex and probably not very nice looking when completed.

Something really cool happened today. I picked up a white "EA Sports" Logitech Cordless Action (PS2) controller off eBay and paired it with my DragonCast PS2 -> DC controller adapter.

Both the controller and VMU work perfectly! Fantastic!

The older original logitech PS2 wireless controller works on the Dreamcast with the controller adapters. The original model is pretty bulky compaired to the redesign which is almost the same size as a PS2 controller.

I have a set of Doc's wireless Dreamcast controllers too but I never use them either. I went through the trouble of getting all that stuff and now I just prefer to use some extension cables for the normal controllers.
