Hmmm, seems I might've sorted out my issue. Not sure if both points are covered here, but I finally managed to get number 3s CDROM working in number 1 (turns out the flat cable does have a right and wrong way) and it works perfectly.
Except now number 1 is doing the sega rally v-hold thing, so it's clear that it's the CDROM causing me woes for the moment.
Of all my games, Guardian Heroes is another to do the vhold issue, but i've noticed that it only occurs when the screen goes extremely white, then when it's colourful again, the sync returns.
So I guess for now, i'll look for a new CDROM or just pick up another cheap one and pull it out of that.
