In looking at the pictures, I noticed a large number of people wearing surgical masks. Why is this the case? I don't think this is related to the disaster as I saw people wearing them at photos of the 3DS launch.
It is due to concerns about pollution.
With the disaster there may be more reason to wear masks as there may be more dust particles and such in the air from the shaking and destroyed buildings I guess.
Also, although it won't stop radioactivity, it may keep dust contaminated from being breathed in, so it can also reduce problems from that.
Ivo.
Not really just pollution.
People commonly wear those masks when there are flus and other sicknesses going around. If they are sick, they wear them to help stop spreading it. If others are, they want to avoid catching it. Helpful or not (it is debated a bit), wearing one at least SHOWS that you have concern for others around you.

Just another reason why I love Japanese people. I think it's so cool that they wear masks when they are sick because they are considerate of others.
It's also really nice that they don't riot and loot at times like this. We Americans can really learn a lot from Japan.
I'm not sure if these have been posted already, but just goes to show the devastating force of all this. Really really sad to see peoples homes, business, lives, everything quite literally being swept away. It breaks my heart:
Upsidedown_Fuji: I know what you mean. I am hearing these somewhat annoying questions from anchors here asking questions to reports on scene. They are saying stupid things like "There must be some widespread looting due to the shortages of food." It just sounds ignorant. I am not saying Japan is better than anybody, but in keeping the order, they excel. Tell your wife to be strong and you guys will get through this!
All but one of the people are I am looking for have been confirmed safe. Now my worry is the safety of those same people due to the situation in Fukushima. I told them to get as far away from it as possible. My fiance, who lives here in America, is telling her parents and other family members to leave Japan and come here to America until things settle down. I think her parents might come here.
This is very infuriating. The governor of Tokyo (not mayor, as Tokyo technically isn't a city) Ishihara said something very insensitive and just plain idiotic. Those of you who know his reputation know that Ishihara always says something negative or critical about bad situations. He's constantly criticizing Japanese people (yet he keeps getting elected).
He says the tsunami was divine punishment and that the selfishness and greed of the Japanese people needed to be washed away.

Uhh...What??

That's the word I was looking for.
How could someone say something like that? Especially someone who is in a position of leadership. That's something I'd expect from a facebook page or something.
and hashiriya1, I hope your fiance's family makes it here safely if they decide to make the trip.

Ishihara is the one who is always trying to ban manga and anime, and actually helped get some laws passed.
Now he says this disaster is divine retribution? What a horrible person. It really pisses me off.
I read that he later apologized for that comment but we all know he is still an asshole. A Japan hating moron is not the kind of person you want as the Tokyo governor. Japan deserves much better than that.
I already donated a little to help Japan a few days ago, but I just got paid today so I plan on donating more very soon. I love Japan, its people, language, culture, food, and of course video games.

Say how you really feel, then erase it with an apology. Typical ojisan-with-power mentality. He already planned to apologize for it, he just wanted to get the message out.
