^This.

Variety is the spice of life. Having two very different games going at once is the best way to avoid burn out.

Also...sometimes burn out just happens. If gaming is not making you happy right now, just don't game. It'll come back to you sooner or later. When I was not much older than you I completely gave up on gaming - just had no interest. That went on for a couple of years until I decided to give it another shot and re-discovered what kind of gamer I had become.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

a lot of things/interest will change when your a teen. when i was at your age i didn't see gaming in the same eye as much as i do today. when you grow more older "nostalgia" will hit you back..i have a black eye right now. :P

Yep. I know it all too well. I collected a bunch of games as a kid, sold a lot of them when I was a teenager, and then bought em back in my 20's. >_>

i'm actually getting burnt out on console games in general. i've been reading about PC and Mac games for a few months now, downloading here and there, playing mostly when i have free time. not sure why that is.

i'm still collecting saturn games though, i don't think i'll ever get tired of that system.

The Saturn still is my favorite game machine of all time. I don't really play it much anymore though.

I think I may be in denial about being burned out on retro games. I have tons of consoles hooked up to my TV, yet I only seem to regularly play the Xbox360 and my PS3. Though the games I play on those consoles are retro-style (i.e. Super Meat Boy, 3D Dot Heroes), the extra hassle of finding the right cart or CD for my other real consoles, pulling out the right (probably wired) controllers, and making sure I find the right channel on the TV seems like a big chore. I guess it's a time and convenience thing. I just don't have as much free time to burn as back in high school. My patience also wears thin much more easily with games, even awesome titles like Super Meat Boy. Although SMB has thoroughly impressed me, finishing the dark world levels is so punishingly hard that after ending a few game sessions totally pissed off and angry I had to seriously question whether I was investing my free time in an enjoyable way.
I run the 8/16-bit retro site TimeWarpGamer and if you want to follow the latest updates, check me out on Twitter.

I have to admit i do not game nearly as much as i used to be it retro or more current. And it doesn't bother me at all because when you think about it i've been playing games since i was a kid and thats roughly 20 years of gaming.

However there comes a time when you want to explore new interests sure finding out about the various awesome consoles i missed out on has been a ton of fun. There was a year i almost exclusively played only nes games and discovered many a hidden gem.

Equally awesome was modding my saturn and finding out just how damn easy it is to burn games for the dreamcast.

Or the time i got a iso of Rondo of Blood for the tg-16 i was stunned by how much awesome the combination of 16bit ish graphics and cd audio really is.

The point is i have been around gaming for a long time so it's only natural i spend less time gaming and more time learning new stuff.

For instance i recently got into watching old movies and actually im more excited about hunting for lost or forgotten movies on vhs than games because that's something i have yet to explore.

As far as I can tell this is just the natural ebb and flow of human interest. There are times when I will switch to some other form of entertainment because I simply have no interest in playing games. Heck, there are times when I have no interest in really doing much of anything. There's always the possibility that you'll never feel the desire to come back to it, but getting burned out isn't uncommon (as one can likely tell merely by the general response to this thread).

I barely play games in general. It really has nothing to do with them being old or new. I've bought 4 games in the last month, and I haven't played any of them. And they're all games I wanted to play. An NES game, a SNES game, a wii game, and an Xbox game.

I've been working, working on working, and watching a lot of Dexter. I've got a rediculous backlog of movies to watch, and the rest of the time I'm working on screenplays, or surfing the world wide web.

Part of it is that I live at home and my 'gameroom' is not a place I like to spend lots of time. It seems to be the room that gets filled with junk nobody can find a place for, and the guinea pig won't stop biting the goddamn cage. My newer games as well as my snes and n64 are down here where I hide out, hooked up to my HDTV (not optimal).

But then there are times when I'll just sit down and go through old games for a few hours.

It's a case of having the available money but not the available time. Lots of people here will snap up good deals in the wild, but that means you can easily get into a situation where you have more games then you can get through due to work/school and other time obligations.

Haha, kind of ironic how as a child I used to DREAM of having all those games I'd see in the ads, and now that I do. I don't even play them...
