RETAIL PC gaming is dying.

There is a HUGE difference there. One is true, the other is false.
Gaming accomplishments:
Nibbler (marathon): 251,169,160 / Nibbler (one life): 5,263,360 (WR)
Donkey Kong: 423,100 [L12-1] (150th place as of 2019-01-15)
Super Smash Bros. (N64): Ranked top 5 in Wisconsin from Q1 2016 to Q2 2017
Shrek SuperSlam: won largest tournament in game's history (Shrekfest 2018)

Those sale aggregators don't count Steam, GOG, and the like. So it paints an incomplete picture. Nor do they count the money rolling into MMO monthly fees either. So yeah, what JT said.

There's no surprise here. The big chains chose long ago that they were going to focus only on consoles and give PC a shelf at most. It's not that Steam and Gog beat retail, retail beat itself long ago.

This is just like people saying movie theaters are dying because of (enter whatever new technology here). When I worked at a theater in my hometown my boss had been in the movie business since the 50s and said he heard theaters were dying as long as he's been in the business. As long as there are movies, there will be movie theaters and as long as there are PCs, there will be PC gaming.

Ha, I used to work at a theater, and they always had this weird theater magazine near the booth that I would look at sometimes on weekdays (theaters tend to be pretty dead at 2pm on a tuesday). Every single issue had some article about how theaters were going to die because of some new technology. It's like they can't comprehend that going to the theater in itself is enough of a unique experience to draw a crowd.
