If you take the game online to ranked matches, it's to be expected. People are fighting for pride, for titles and for cheevos. They'll be giving it their all and pulling no punches.

Play some player matches with friends. Really, MvC3 is the BEST starting point. Mission Mode and Simple Operation make it THE starting point, to be completely honest. Just don't ignore the tools given to you, you can turn your win-lose ratio around.

Alright, I know they always say "No Coaching", but...

1) (insert character here) is not broken. Overpowered, maybe. Full of options, perhaps. The fact of the matter is that every character has a major weakness - you just need to find it and exploit it.

2) No move is full proof. Much like characters, every move has some drawback to it. Don't spam the same move over and over - and if someone spams the same move over and over again, find the weakness.

3) If you lost, it's for one of two reasons - you lack the understanding of your opposition, or you lack execution. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are dropping combos, or do a Hadoken when you meant to do a Shoryuken - that's you lacking execution . That's all you. (and hey, it happens to me too.) Hit training mode.

4) Don't ignore training mode, and don't ignore mission mode. Applying exactly what you learn in mission mode isn't going to make you win - you should use them as building blocks. Break apart what you learned in, say, Mission 9, and see what is going to be practical to you in certain situation. Many of the combos I learned in mission mode I still use, although slightly modified for convenience.

5) Don't tag in naked. This is asking for a case of the free combos. Use DHCs or Crossover Counters to tag in, as this is far safer. If you see an enemy tag in naked, you should do a quickly-punishing super on impulse alone. If you HAVE to tag in naked, do something that will leave an obstacle on the screen for the enemy to deal with - Trish's traps, MODOK's Barrier, Arthur's fire bottles, slow moving projectiles, you get the idea.

6) Punish your enemies assists. Protect your own. There is no greater embarrassment than losing two characters at the same time. There is no greater asset than taking out two of your enemies characters with one combo.

7) THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT, and if you just understand this one thing, you will be leagues ahead of at least 50% of those playing online currently. You are not picking 3 characters to fight 3 characters. You are picking A TEAM and fighting A TEAM. All of your characters should support each other.

For example, the team I mainly use is Felicia (Rolling Slide), Morrigan (Soul Fist), and Dante (Jam Session). Felicia lacks projectiles and anti-air - Soul Fist and Jam Session take care of that. Morrigan can set up unblockable combos with Felicia's Rolling Slide, and Jam Session helps her zoning strategy and makes for a perfect set-up with her Lv3. With Dante on point, Rolling Slide and Soul Fist are extremely confusing when used in tandem with Teleport, and will instantly put the enemy on the defensive - it'll also prevent the enemy from attacking my assists unless they want Dante to stab them in the back.

Just remember - it's still early. We're all learning this game. If you keep at it, perhaps you'll learn something no one else will.

(Oh yeah - and because I hear people complain about it a lot: Time Out Victories ARE STILL VICTORIES. If you are fighting a lone X-Factor Lv 3 Dark Phoenix and you have the abilities to run the clock down and win through a time-out: Good for you. You won, and no amount of whining about being a p*ssy should ever convince you to 'properly' kill your opponent when you can just as easily win another way.)

While this is true, I feel its kind of detrimental to actually learning the game. Simple takes away a lot of options, and I imagine that somebody who gets used to simple mode might get frustrated when they try to move up.

I got my wife playing MVC3 with me the other day, and I resisted the temptation to start her on simple mode. She grumped at me about this at first, but she tried the game anyway.

It took her a few minutes to get used to things, but once she did she had a lot of fun. I know it was really satisfying for her when she learned enough about the timing to reliably use specials and hypers. I sincerely doubt the experience would have been the same for her on simple.

For the sake of this story, its worth nothing that she is exactly the kind of newbie simple mode was made for.

Online is never as fun as playing people in person, so that might be a factor. Really though, MVC3 is very easy to just pick up and play. Either fighters aren't for you if you're giving up that quickly - or MVC3 is just not your game. Are you having fun at all?
If I'm having fun even when getting destroyed, chances are the game I'm playing is a pretty good fighter.

(Incidentally, I'm not having fun with MVC3 regardless of winning/losing, so there's that.)

I dont think so, I learned and so can anybody else. I didnt need a crutch. I rather get my ass handed to me then to win a match knowing I had help.

Simple mode is for a different audience all together. It helps bring in the players that have no experience with a fighting game.
