Just posting to tell you that I'm still faffing about with the pots. I'm not ignoring your advice or anything.

Decided to bring some closure to this thread of mine. I killed the laser when I was adjusting the pots and got a new drive. It works great, though it doesn't seem to like KillZone. :?
