That's pretty cool. I doubt there could be any speed improvements, but it's a big deal as far as getting a hard drive goes. PATA drives are getting annoying to buy, SATA drives are super cheap now.

They advertise compatibility with 2TB drives as well. My entire PS2 collection would fit on the of those!

The lack of LAN port doesn't bother me. My main interest is ensuring I get the most life out of my PS2 (which means not having the laser die on me 2 years from now).

Not to pull this too off topic here, but has this kind of thing been done to the FFXII International version? Like has someone maybe patched in the English translation from the original game or something? Been very curious about that release...

I believe someone has released an english patch for final fantasy xii zodiac job system or whatever its called. I think it still uses the english dub though.

I don't take it out that often (4-5 times per year?). I also have a USB<->IDE cable that I use to easily hook it up to the PC.

The PS2 network connection is so slow that I can't be bothered to use it.

Meh. I wasn't happy with the speeds either, but got used to it. What's this about a USB-IDE cable? Can you use it with WinHiip or HDL Dumb?

Yes, it works with WinHiip which is what I use. As for HDL Dumb, I have never tried it.

Ah, OK. Never seen that before. I use to just use an external HDD enclosure, but I got sick of taking the HDD out of the PS2. I know the network takes longer, and that's why I didn't use it at first, but it's not that big of a deal. I think the little extra time you have to wait is worth the hassle of removing the HDD and putting it back.

Yeah, setting up a transfer and doing something else for 22 minutes is a lot nicer than 10 minutes of fiddling with screws and cables etc. I guess it depends on whether you tend to dump games one at a time, or if you want to do a big batch of them.

And 2TB? I have a 500GB drive in mine, and I've only used 100gig, and haven't played most of that. Would be nice for future proofing, but I imagine a small SSD through an SATA adaptor will be feasible into the far future.

Do you use XP or Win 7? I remember you mentioning a while ago you couldn't get HDL Dump to work correctly on 7. If you found a fix, I am definitely going to switch over from winhiip because unhooking the darned thing and then hooking it up to my comp is a pain.

Well here's the thing, I use to have HDAdvance 3.0 and I set it up the way they describe on their site. They host HDL Dumb version 0.8.1 for download. I couldn't get that version to work with 7 so I use to use it in XP on a virtual PC (on my Win 7 PC). I used my second NIC and a crossover cable. It worked perfectly.

Fast forward, I reinstalled my OS and lost that virtual XP. When I went to set it back up, I had issues getting it to work. Also, when I redownloaded HDL Dumb 0.8.1 from the HDAdvance website, AVG told me there was a trojan in it! So I looked around the web for other versions, but couldn't get it to work for some odd reason.

Now, I stopped using HDAdvance because I finally got Free MCboot on a memory card (so now I use Open PS2 Loader). And I had some issues getting this to work as well. I was trying HDL Dumb 0.9.0 in my virtaul XP and just regularly in 7 and couldn't get it to work. I was switching back and forth trying to use the crossover cable on my second NIC and just going through my router. Finally, I tried HDL Dumb version 0.8.6 and it worked. And it works in 7, too. Weird though, the same settings that works in 0.8.6 didn't work for me in 0.9.0 so I don't know what the deal is with that. I'm just glad I got it working again.
